The present invention is directed to a coating composition for use as topcoat lacquer on a multi-layer lacquer coating for substrates such as automobile bodies and parts. The coating composition is based upon a combination of hydroxyl-functional methacrylic copolymers, carboxy-functional blocked urethane prepolymers, crosslinking agents and optional hydroxyl-functional polyesters. The carboxy-functional polyurethane prepolymer is formed from a combination of organic diols, polycarboxylic acids, polyols, hydroxyl-carboxylic acids, aliphatic or aryl polyisocyanates and monofunctional isocyanate blocking agents. The lacquer coating according to the invention has a high sulfuric acid resistance and has a high solids content.

A solvent based coating composition containing a binding agent, the binding agent comprising: (a) 10 to 80 wt.% of at least one hydroxyfunctional polyester formed by reacting a mixture comprising: (i) 10 to 40 mol.% of a 2,2-dialkylalkanediol with two primary OH groups; (ii) 10 to 30 mol.% of a polyol with at least one secondary OH group; (iii) 20 to 50 mol.% of an aliphatic or cycloaliphatic dicarboxylic acid with fewer than 16 C atoms or anhydrides thereof; (iv) 5 to 30 mol.% of a compound selected from the group consisting of dimeric fatty acids, dimeric diols, epsilon-caprolactone, and mixtures thereof; (v) 1 to 15 mol.% of a hydroxycarboxylic acid with at least one hydroxy group and at least one carboxyl group; and (b) 10 to 80 wt.% of a (meth)acrylic copolymer containing a hydroxyl group; and (c) 10 to 60 wt.% of a crosslinking agent; wherein the sum of the wt.% of components (a)-(c) is 100% of the binding agent.

A coating agent with a viscosity of 100-1000 mPa.s, measured by rotational viscometry at 70.degree. C. and a shear rate of 235 s.sup.-1, containing45-85 wt % of one or more polyesters, that have a branched structure and are essentially free from aromatic structural units, with a number-average molecular weight (M.sub.n) of 350-3000 and a polydispersity of less than 3.5,10-40 wt % of one or more cross-linkers based on aminoplastic resins and/or blocked di- and/or polyisocyanates,0-20 wt % of one or more reactive diluents, and 0-10 wt % of one or more organic solvents.They are particularly suitable as hot-sprayable clear coats for multicoat lacquer finishes.
