    摘要: Thermally stable abrasive compacts of hexagonal shape have been found to have excellent abrasive properties in the abrading of a medium to soft rock having an unconfined compressive strength of less than 240 MPa. Preferably the abrasive tool used is a surface set drill bit wherein some of the thermally stable abrasive compacts are so located around the working edge of the bit that a side thereof acts as a gauge stone for the working portion.

    摘要: A tool component is provided which comprises an abrasive compact bonded to a cemented carbide support body. The abrasive compact has two zones which are joined by an interlocking, common boundary. The one zone provides the cutting edge or point for the tool component while the other zone is bonded to the cemented carbide support body. In use, the tool component is so located in the working surface of the tool that the lower zone is partially embedded in that surface. The interlocking, common boundary is located above the working surface.

    摘要: An abrasive body is provided which has high strength and an ability to withstand high temperatures making it suitable as a tool insert for dressing tools and surface set drill bits. The body comprises a mass of diamond particles present in an amount of 80 to 90 percent by volume of the body and a second phase present in an amount of 10 to 20 percent by volume of the body, the mass of diamond particles containing substantial diamond-to-diamond bonding to form a coherent skeletal mass and the second phase containing nickel and silicon, the nickel being in the form of nickel and/or nickel silicide and the silicon being in the form of silicon, silicon carbide and/or nickel silicide. The abrasive bodies are made under conditions of elevated temperature and pressure suitable for diamond compact manufacture.

    摘要: The invention provides a method of making an abrasive product which comprises a layer of bonded ultra-hard abrasive particles bonded to a substrate. The abrasive product is typically a diamond or cubic boron nitride composite compact. The method includes the steps of:(a) providing a substrate which has a surface to which the layer of bonded ultra-hard abrasive particles is to be bonded;(b) providing a slurry of the components, in particulate form, necessary to make the layer of bonded ultra-hard abrasive particles in a liquid medium adapted to flow and to set to a green state under predetermined conditions;(c) applying a layer of the slurry to the surface of the substrate;(d) applying the predetermined conditions during step (c) or immediately thereafter to cause the liquid medium to set to a green state;(e) contacting the green state layer with a complemental surface provided on a pressure pad;(f) removing substantially all the liquid medium from the green state layer;(g) placing the substrate/pressure pad combination in the reaction zone of a high temperature/high pressure apparatus; and(h) applying conditions of elevated temperature and pressure to the combination to convert the green state layer into a layer of bonded ultra-hard abrasive particles which is bonded to the substrate.

    摘要: A tool insert comprising a composite diamond abrasive compact and a method of its production are provided. The composite abrasive compact is characterized by an intermediate layer between the diamond compact and the cemented carbide support. The intermediate layer consists essentially of discrete cubic boron nitride particles constituting 60 to 40 percent by volume of the intermediate layer, carbide particles, preferably tungsten carbide particles and diamond solvent, preferably cobalt. The carbide particles and diamond solvent together constitute 40 to 60 percent by volume of the intermediate layer and the diamond solvent constitutes 15 to 25 percent by volume of the carbide/solvent combination.

The thermally stable diamond compact, which preferably has a hexagonal or circular shape in plan, comprises a mass of diamond particles present in an amount of 80 to 90 percent by volume of the compact and a second phase present in an amount of 10 to 20 percent by volume of the compact, the mass of diamond particles containing substantial diamond-to-diamond bonding to form a coherent, skeletal mass and a second phase consisting essentially of silicon, the silicon being in the form of silicon and/or silicon carbide.
