A coil spring for fuel cells, used for a fuel cell or a cartridge for the fuel cell, comprising an austenite type stainless steel without any nickel layer formed on the surface thereof, and having a cationic index I of not more than 60 as expressed by the following formula (1), I=A+2B+3C (1) wherein A, B and C represent, respectively, a concentration (ppb) of monovalent metal ions, a concentration (ppb) of metal ions which are neither monovalent nor trivalent, and a concentration (ppb) of trivalent metal ions per the coil spring in a methanol solution of when the coil spring is dipped in the methanol solution (containing 1% of water+4000 ppm of formic acid) and preserved therein at 60° C. for one week. Even when brought into contact with the content solution exhibiting acidity of the fuel cell, the coil spring reliably suppresses the elution of metal ions thereof.

Provided is a methanol fuel cell cartridge formed of a container comprising a polyester-based resin layer which has a methanol vapor permeability coefficient at 40° C. of 3 μg·mm/m2·hr or less and a cation index in a methanol immersion test of 30 or less, and is produced by using a titanium-based catalyst. According to the present invention, the methanol fuel cell cartridge can be produced at low cost, which is excellent in impermeability (barrier performance) to methanol and oxygen, can be downsized, reduced in weight, and increased in transparency, and does not cause deterioration in battery performance of the fuel cell during operation.

This invention provides an elastic member for a methanol fuel cell cartridge, comprising an elastomer having a compression set of 1 to 80 and a hardness (type A) of 40 to 70 and having an operating limit time of 10,000 hours or more determined by a DMFC performance test for the fuel cell. The elastic member can prevent leakage of methanol from a methanol fuel cell cartridge, or a connection part between the cartridge and a fuel cell body and, at the same time, can realize long-term operation of the fuel cell without causing deterioration of power generation performance.
