A photographic film cassette has a spool lock mechanism, which is unlocked by a camera member when the film cassette is loaded in a camera. When the unlocked spool is unwound by a camera mechanism, a leader end of a film roll coiled on the spool is advanced outwardly from the interior of the cassette passing through a film passage mouth. When the spool is wound after the photographic film is exposed, the exposed photographic film is wound on the spool. During this winding operation, the film leader end is retained in the film passage mouth by an arresting hook. When the film in the film cassette is not exposed, an indicator shows an unexposed state, but shows an exposed state after the film in the film cassette has been exposed.

A self-advancing film cassette has at least one separation claw for separating a film leader from a roll of film. This separation claw is disposed within a cassette shell so that it will contact an outermost peripheral surface of a photographic film on the outer side of an area where a picture frame is to be formed. The separation claw is so configured that the contact position between the tip thereof and an end face of a film leader end is 1/3 or more of the film thickness when measured from the outer surface of the photographic film. The film leader projects most at a portion corresponding to the separation claw, and the film leader is formed to be narrow so that it will not be stuck to the film roll. In one embodiment, the film leader is subjected to deformation treatment to form a corrugated leading portion, or to rigidity increasing treatment to form a more rigid leading portion.

Two positioning holes are formed in an end face of the cassette shell on an advancing side as inserted into a cassette receiving chamber of a camera, and are fittable on projections of a camera when the cassette shell is loaded therein. Three projections are formed on the end face, and come into contact with an upper inside face of the chamber of the camera when the cassette is loaded in the camera, in order to position the cassette shell vertically. The chamber has an engaging pin, which is engaged with a groove in the cassette shell, to prevent the cassette from dropping out, even when a chamber door is opened downward. A DX code pattern and a use-condition signaling structure are disposed adjacently on the cassette shell, and represent respectively a sensitivity of the photographic film and a condition of use thereof, both of which are detected by a single sensor unit of the camera.

A photo film cassette contains a spool in rotatable fashion, with a photo film wound thereabout as a roll. Rotation of the spool in an unwinding direction causes the photo film to exit through a passage port. Upper and lower shell halves constitute a cassette shell. Two combinations of a retaining hook and a receiving portion are disposed on the cassette shell and respectively beside the passage port. Both hooks are formed on the lower shell half. Both receiving portions are formed on the upper shell half, are engaged with the hook, and fixedly secure the shell halves. The hooks and the receiving portions are shaped straight along a width of the photo film. A pair of second receiving portions are formed on the upper shell half, and are engaged with the hooks prior to engagement of the first receiving portions with the hooks. The second receiving portions keep the upper shell half partially separate from the lower shell half, and retain the shell halves in preliminary fashion, before the shell halves are joined up. In a preferred embodiment, a hinge section is disposed in the cassette shell in opposition to the passage port, and connects the shell halves in swingable fashion. Two access openings are formed in the cassette shell for rendering the hooks respectively accessible externally, to allow external disengagement of the hooks.
