    摘要: A condensed power supply circuit for powering a gas discharge lamp with bi-directional current reduces duty cycle by increasing dead time. The circuit comprises an arrangement for supplying d.c. power from an a.c. voltage, a series half bridge converter, a boost converter, a resistor-capacitor delay circuit associated with a gate to control dead time, and a snubber capacitance for facilitating zero voltage switching to fill the entire dead time. The series half-bridge converter alternately impresses a d.c. bus voltage from a bus conductor across a load circuit first with one polarity and then with an opposite polarity. The series half-bridge converter includes a first switch, a second switch, and a switching control circuit for alternately switching on the first and second switches. The boost converter comprises a boost capacitor, a boost inductor, and means for periodically connecting a load end of the boost inductor through a low impedance path to the ground conductor, thereby charging the boost inductor. The present invention reduces duty cycle via an increase in dead time. The resistor-capacitor delay circuit, associated with a gate, is used to control dead time. The snubber capacitance, which facilitates zero voltage switching to fill the entire dead time range, has a value set by the resistor-capacitor delay circuit.

    摘要: A lamp cathode-to-ballast interconnect is provided in combination with a lamp having elongated cathodes and ballast circuitry for supplying power to the cathodes. The lamp cathode-to-ballast interconnect comprises a plurality of conductive clips connected to the ballast circuitry. Each clip has a generally flat portion connected at a first end to ballast circuitry and has a pinching groove formed through the flat portion and extending to a cathode-receiving opening at a second end. The interconnect further comprises a loom for holding the lamp cathodes. The loom comprises, for each cathode, a pair of cathode-receiving support grooves separated by a space in which a second end of an associated conductive clip is to be received. Walls of each of the pair of cathode-receiving support grooves grip therein-received portions of the cathode with sufficient force to enable a gas-tight contact to be made with its associated conductive clip when the cathode is received within the pinching groove of the clip. In a method of connecting elongated cathodes from a lamp to ballast circuitry for a lamp, the cathodes are gripped and inserted by machine implementation into respective pairs of cathode-receiving support grooves of the loom. A conductive clip is moved into a respective clip-receiving space in the loom so that the pinching groove of the clip receives and pinches a cathode and completes a gas-tight connection between the clip and the cathode.

    摘要: A ballast circuit for a gas discharge lamp, of the type having a pair of resistively heated cathodes that are resistively heated both during a cathode pre-heat period prior to lamp turn-on, and during steady state lamp operation, is disclosed. The ballast circuit includes circuitry for providing, on a bus conductor, a d.c. bus voltage with respect to a ground, and a converter, responsive to the d.c. bus voltage, for supplying bidirectional current to a resonant load circuit. The resonant load circuit includes the gas discharge lamp, a resonant capacitor coupled between the lamp cathodes such that its voltage varies with lamp voltage, and a resonant inductor serially coupled to the resonant capacitor and cooperating therewith to set a magnitude, and resonant frequency, of the bidirectional lamp current. Circuitry is provided for powering the resistively heated lamp cathodes, to thereby heat the cathodes. Further included is a circuit for maintaining the lamp voltage during a cathode pre-heat period below a predetermined level so as to prevent lamp turn-on during such period; such circuit includes circuitry for holding a first cathode of the lamp at a substantially constant voltage, and circuitry for clamping a second cathode of the lamp below the predetermined level. Such clamping circuitry includes a positive temperature coefficient (PTC) impedance device coupled to a second cathode of the lamp, and serially connected by a positively poled clamping diode to the bus conductor, and serially connected by a negatively poled clamping diode to the ground.

    摘要: The present invention provides a lighting system powered by a system power source. The lighting system includes a ballast in operative connection with the system power source where the ballast is designed to generate a lamp input signal. A lamp input line is operatively connected to receive the lamp input signal. Further, a gas discharge lamp is in operative connection to the lamp input line configured to receive the lamp input signal. An amplitude modulation circuit is then placed in operative connection to the lamp input line, where the amplitude modulation circuit is configured to periodically modulate amplitudes of the lamp input signal prior to the lamp input signal being received by the gas discharge lamp. Operation of the amplitude modulation circuit results in a periodic amplitude modulation of the lamp input signal and eliminating visual striations otherwise occurring in the lamp.

    摘要: A gas discharge lamp ballast comprises a load circuit including circuitry for connection to a gas discharge lamp. A circuit supplies d.c. power from an a.c. voltage. A d.c.-to-a.c. converter circuit is coupled to the load circuit for inducing a.c. current therein. The converter circuit comprises first and second converter switches serially connected in the foregoing order between a bus node at a d.c. voltage and a reference node, and being connected together at a common node through which the a.c. load current flows. The first and second converter switches each have a control node and a reference node, the voltage between such nodes determining the conduction state of the associated switch. The respective control nodes of the first and second converter switches are interconnected. The respective reference nodes of the first and second converter switches are connected together at the common node. A boost converter comprises a boost capacitor connected between the bus and reference nodes and whose level of charge determines the bus voltage on the bus conductor. A boost inductor stores energy from the circuit that supplies d.c. power, the boost inductor being connected by at least one diode to the boost capacitor, for discharging its energy into the boost capacitor. A boost switch periodically connects the boost inductor through a low impedance path to the bus node to thereby charge the boost inductor. The boost switch comprises the first switch of the converter circuit. The ballast achieves a high degree of power factor correction.

    摘要: Disclosed is a fluorescent lamp and ballast arrangement of the type having a lamp base for connection to a fixture that also accommodates a lamp base of an incandescent lamp. A ballast circuit contains a first conversion circuit which converts a.c. voltage to d.c. voltage and which has an electrolytic capacitor for smoothing the d.c. voltage. The ballast circuit further includes a second conversion circuit which converts the d.c. voltage into a.c. current and which includes a resonant inductor and resonant capacitor. A ballast housing has first and second ends spaced along a longitudinal axis of the housing and encloses parts of the ballast circuit. Only two lamp tube portions of the lamp terminate in the first end of the ballast housing, with the resonant inductor being positioned between the two lamp tube portions. Preferably, a pair of printed-circuit boards are positioned within the ballast housing, between the electrolytic capacitor and the resonant inductor, and are dimensioned to convectively shield the capacitor from the inductor and the lamp tube portions. Substantially all ballast components in addition to the resonant inductor and the electrolytic capacitor are preferably sandwiched between the pair of printed-circuit boards. Additionally, the electrolytic capacitor is preferably positioned at least partially within the lamp base. Employing all the foregoing features together has resulted in ballast component temperatures that are equal to, or lower, than ballast component temperatures on comparable high wattage (i.e., greater than about 20 watts) but much larger ballasts that are integral (as here) to the lamp.
