Abstract:
A feedback control system including differentiating means and integrating means is disclosed in accordance with the teachings of the present invention wherein the effective time constants of the differentiating means and the integrating means are simultaneously modified in accordance with a single adjusting means such that said time constants maintain a constant relationship with respect to each other. The single adjusting means includes variable proportioning means for producing a signal proportional to an input signal such that the ratio of proportionality between the produced signal and the input signal is adapted to be altered, and reciprocal means supplied with said input signal such that said relationship is equal to the reciprocal of said ratio of proportionality. The produced signal and the generated signal are applied to the differentiating means and the integrating means whereby the effective time constants thereof are modified in accordance with said ratio of proportionality. The sensitivity of the feedback control system may be modified by second adjusting means.
Abstract:
Apparatus for controlling the operation of a device is disclosed in accordance with the teachings of the present invention wherein the actual operation of the device is detected by detecting means and compared to a predetermined standard of performance. Indications of the variance between the actual operation of the device and the predetermined standard of performance are utilized by control function generating means to generate a device control function which adjusts the operation of the device such that the variance is reduced to zero. The device control function is additionally applied to device simulating means which simulates the response of the device to the device control function and generates a simulating function representative of that response. The control function generating means combines the simulating function with the indicated variance to produce the control function which includes a substantially noise-free component indicative of the rate of change of the operation of the device thereby anticipating the future operation of the device.
Abstract:
A method of noise suppression and the apparatus therefor is provided wherein the distinctive rate of change of the noise signal is relied upon to achieve the isolation and suppression thereof. In one embodiment of the disclosed invention, the composite waveform including the noise and information component signals is applied to both a linear and a nonlinear signal transfer means. The nonlinear transfer means is designed so that it will only pass the entire magnitude of signal components having a relatively high rate of change and thus only the noise component is wholly passed thereby. Thereafter, the isolated noise component signal is subtracted from the composite waveform as passed by the linear transfer means and a substantially noisefree information signal is thereby obtained.
Abstract:
The invention relates to a method of and apparatus for automatically measuring the sideway displacement of a continuous web. In accordance with the invention, one or more sound wave paths which are variably attenuated by sideway displacement of one or more edges of a continuous and moving web are used to automatically measure the amount and direction of such sideway displacement of the web. In one of the embodiments, two sound wave paths are each translated into separate electrical voltages having a magnitude corresponding to the magnitude of the sound wave and a polarity identifying the particular sound path. The difference in the magnitudes of the voltages and the polarity thereof are measured to indicate the amount and direction respectively, of the sideway displacement of the web.

A frictionless fluid-mechanical transducer system for establishing and maintaining the position of a fluid jet nozzle within a pressure chamber. A very small force, applied to a lever external to the pressure chamber, is transmitted through a novel, frictionless linkage system to position a jet nozzle between a pair of fluid outlets thereby proportioning the flow of a pressurized fluid from the jet nozzle between the outlets.
