A method is provided for producing a modified addition polymer from an ethylenically unsaturated monomer composition that includes at least one monomer having hydroxyl or carboxyl functionality. The ethylenically unsaturated monomer composition, and a free radical initiator therefor, is dissolved in a solvent-free molten composition maintained at an addition polymerization temperature, the molten composition comprising a cyclic compound reactive via ring-opening with the hydroxyl or carboxyl functionality. The resulting material is useful in the manufacture of paints in liquid or powder form.

A cationic electrodeposition composition comprising the reaction product of one or more base alkyds, containing unsaturation of the fatty acid chains to provide oxidative curing and one or more ethylenically unsaturated monomers, and one or more amine functional monomers, which are added to the base alkyd and polymerized. This composition provides a vehicle which is hydrolytically stable. Paints are prepared by the addition of conventional driers, pigments and solvents to the vehicle composition.

The ethylenically unsaturated macromonomer may be derived from the reaction of an acid functional intermediate, which may be the acidolysis reaction product of an engineered polyester and an acid or anhydride functional material with an hydroxyl-functional, amine-functional, or epoxy functional reactant, optionally in the presence of a polyacid, to yield a resin intermediate, which may subsequently be reacted with an ethylenically unsaturated coupling agent to yield the macromonomer. The resins described herein are useful in generating low VOC acrylic alkyd coatings. Methods of producing water reducible resins are also described.

A waterborne coating composition contains a film forming binder dispersed in an aqueous carrier; wherein the binder is an admixture including (A) about 40-60% by weight of an acrylic silane polymer derived from a monomer blend including alkyl (meth)acrylate monomers and at least one silane containing alkyl (meth)acrylate monomer; and (B) about 60-40% by weight of a polyurethane/acrylic hybrid dispersion. The composition is useful for plastic and metal substrates.
