Abstract: A device includes a substrate, an alignment structure disposed on the substrate, and a layer of a birefringent medium disposed on the alignment structure. The birefringent medium has an extraordinary refractive index, an ordinary refractive index different from the extraordinary refractive index, and an intermediate refractive index between the extraordinary refractive index and the ordinary refractive index. Molecules of the birefringent medium are configured to form helical structures having a helical axis. The layer is configured with an out-of-plane principal refractive index along the helical axis, and two equal in-plane principal refractive indices within a plane perpendicular to the helical axis. The out-of-plane principal refractive index is equal to the intermediate refractive index, and is substantially the same as the two equal in-plane principal refractive indices.

Abstract: A device is provided. The device includes a first polarization hologram element having a first operating wavelength band and configured to selectively backwardly diffract or transmit a first light associated with the first operating wavelength band based on a polarization of the first light. The device also includes a second polarization hologram element having a second operating wavelength band and stacked with the first polarization hologram. A thickness of the first polarization hologram element is configured based on a signal-to-noise ratio between a diffraction efficiency of the first polarization hologram element for the first light and a diffraction efficiency of the first polarization hologram element for a second light associated with the second operating wavelength band being greater than a predetermined value.

Abstract: A Pancharatnam-Berry phase (PBP) lens includes a substrate and one or more liquid crystal material layers on the substrate. The PBP lens can have an f-number less than 1, and can be used in a near-eye display system to project display images to an eye of a user at an efficiency greater than 75% at a peripheral region of the PBP lens.

Abstract: A method includes providing a radiation with a predetermined intensity profile. The predetermined non-uniform distribution of the absorbing additive is configured to result in a predetermined non-uniform absorption of the radiation. The method also includes exposing the photo-sensitive medium layer to the radiation to form a polymer film. The optical film includes at least one predetermined birefringence variation in at least one of a direction within a film plane or a thickness direction of the polymer film.
