A lubricant comprises an emulsion formed from a base stock having the composition 5-99 wt. per cent water and 95-1 wt. per cent of a C 12 -C 40 alkylaromatic compound having 1-3 aromatic rings and an emulsifying agent. Alkyl aromatics specified are nonyl benzene, dodecyl benzene, nonyl naphthalene, and dinonyl naphthalene. 1-3 wt. per cent of the alkyl aromatic may be replaced by a mineral oil. Emulsifiers specified are alkali and alkaline earth metal sulphonates, phenates, phosphates and soaps, polyalkylene oxide compounds and cyclohexanol.
