Abstract:
Copolymers of a cycloalkadienonorbornene and, optionally dicyclopentadiene with ethylene and an aliphatic alpha olefin of the general formula R-CH = CH2, where R is a C1 to C6 alkyl group are made by copolymerizing a mixture of the monomers in the presence of a halogen-containing catalyst obtained from a vanadium compound and beryllium or aluminium organometallic compounds. The Specification contains long lists of suitable catalyst components. The preferred norbornene is 5,6-cyclododecadieno - 41,81 - norbornene - 2, and the alpha-olefin, propylene and/or butene-1. The catalyst preparation and the copolymerization are preferably effected between 0 DEG and - 80 DEG C. The copolymerization may be carried out in bulk, or in a hydrocarbon or halogenated hydrocarbon solvent. The copolymers, soluble in boiling n-heptane, are recovered by conventional low-pressure techniques. The copolymers may be sulphur vulcanized and are then insoluble in organic solvents.
Abstract:
THERE ARE DISCLOSED HIGH-MOLECULAR WEIGHT COPOLYMERS AND MORE PARTICULARLY SUBSTANTIALLY LINEAR, AMORPHOUS COPOLYMERS OF A METHYL-SUBSTITUTED TETRAHYDROINDENE AND AT LEAST ONE MONOMER SELECTED FROM THE GROUP CONSISTING OF ETHYLENE AND HIGHER ALPHA-OLEFINS OF THE GENERAL FORMULA R-CH=CH2 IN WHICH R IS AN ALKYL GROUP CONTAINING FROM 1 TO 6 CARBON ATOMS, WHICH ARE CAPABLE OF BEING VULCANIZED. THERE IS ALSO DISCLOSED A PROCESS FOR PREPARING THE LINEAR, AMORPHOUS, HIGH MOLECULAR WEIGHT COPOLYMERS CAPABLE OF BEING VULCANIZED. THE PROCESS COMPRIESES THE USE OF CATALYSTS ACTING WITH A COORDINATED ANIONIC MECHANISM.
