    摘要: An access terminal may switch to a different mode of wireless network selection as a result of manual selection of a wireless cell set (e.g., a closed subscriber group) associated with one or more wireless cells. For example, if the user of an access terminal selects a closed subscriber group in a wireless network that is different than the current wireless network, the access terminal may enter a manual mode of wireless network selection, select the wireless network corresponding to the closed subscriber group, and register on a closed subscriber group cell in the selected wireless network. In addition, an access terminal may automatically switch to a different mode of wireless network selection (e.g., the prior mode) upon losing coverage of a wireless cell set. An access terminal may also automatically select a cell of a wireless cell set if the access terminal returns to a cell of the cell set within a defined period of time after losing coverage of the cell set. Furthermore, an access terminal may return to a prior wireless network upon losing coverage of a wireless cell set.

    摘要: Methods and apparatus for determining the quality of a communication link transmitting a specified packet type are disclosed. The methodology includes configuring first packets, which share transmission characteristics with a specific packet type, such as a Voice over IP packet, such that the first packets experience similar communication link treatment as the specific packet type. The first packets are then transmitted over the communication link to a quality monitoring server located near a termination equipment of the particular communication link. Second packets, which are transmitted by the server in response to the first packets, are received and evaluated to determine the quality of the communication link based on characteristics of the second packets. Corresponding apparatus are also disclosed.

    摘要: An access point generates beacons at different power levels at different times to provide an acceptable tradeoff between coverage area associated with the beacons and outage experienced at nearby access terminals. For example, a femto access point may transmit beacons at a relatively low power for a relatively long period of time to reduce interference at nearby access terminals that are being served by a macro access point. The femto access point may then transmit beacons at a relatively high power for a relatively short period of time to enable nearby access terminals to receive the beacons. Also, a given transmit chain may be used to provide frequency hopping of high and low power beacons.

    摘要: Broadcast or multicast traffic is classified into different types of traffic such that different types of traffic are transmitted over different sub-networks. In addition, different transmission schedules may be associated with each of the different sub-networks. A device may thus be configured to receive only a selected portion of the different types of traffic by only waking from a power save mode at the intervals at which the corresponding sub-network sends the traffic. The standby time of the wireless station may thus be improved because the wireless station may awaken less frequently and for shorter periods of time. Different sub-networks carrying different types of broadcast and multicast traffic may be implemented in an 802.11-based system. For example, a single access point may define multiple basic service set identifiers for a single wireless channel.

Signal quality of a pilot received from a base station can be measured, and a type (e.g., femto, macro, . . . ) of the base station from which the pilot is received can be identified. According to an example, when the type of the base station is identified as being a femto cell base station, the base station can be recognized as being either preferred or non-preferred. Further, a linger timer can be initiated when the signal quality of the pilot exceeds an entry threshold and the base station is identified as a femto cell base station. Moreover, idle handoff to the base station can be performed upon expiration of the linger timer as a function of at least one subsequent measurement of signal quality of the pilot received from the base station.
