Suturing rings and methods of use thereof facilitating initial implantation of new and replacement of dysfunctional tissue or mechanical heart valve mechanisms supported by the suturing ring are disclosed. The suturing ring annulus is adjustable to receive and engage the valve frame of the heart valve mechanism within the annulus. An interlocking mechanism applies restraint to fix the adjusted suturing ring annulus engaged against the valve frame to support the heart valve mechanism during chronic implantation. Sutures affixing the suturing ring to the valvar rim can be routed and entrapped between the suturing ring annulus and the valve frame when the suturing ring is restraint is applied. The restraint is released to replace a dysfunctional heart valve mechanism and reapplied when a new heart valve mechanism is fitted into the annulus.

A heart valve prosthesis having an annular valve housing or base and two leaflets supported for pivotable movement within the annular valve housing. Each valve leaflet possesses a composite curvature shape with pivoting hinges being purposely offset to the hydraulic force center of the annular valve housing to provide fast response of the leaflets to flow direction change. The hinge mechanism includes modified serpentine curved hinge recesses in the annular valve housing for receiving elongated leaflet ears allowing the leaflets to change their motion modes approaching the closed position to reduce leaflet-edge tangential velocity and impact of the minor edges against one another and the major edges against the housing seat upon closure. The composite curvature leaflets allow maximal central flow with consequent lower pressure drop during the open phase and minimal regurgitation during the closing phase. The curved leaflet major trailing edges in the open position reduces boundary separation and associated turbulence along the flow stream direction.

One or more split portions or tab portions on the band are adapted to lock the band in engagement with the flange of the frame. Such a device can be used to more easily replace a heart valve by advancing a sutures through a suturing ring on the valve and the valvular rim such that they are brought outward of the flange extending from the frame and then advancing the band over the valve and over the sutures at a proximal, outflow end of the valve until the band engages the flange and captures the sutures between the band and the flange.

The present invention provides a method for modifying a pyrolytic carbon surface to improve adhesion between it and a subsequently added polymer and/or a bio-active compound. In particular, plasma depositing an oxygen-containing, silicon-containing film forming monomer on a pyrolytic carbon surface improves adhesion of a polymer thereto, wherein the modified pyrolytic carbon surface and silicone rubber has a wet adhesion peel force greater than the wet adhesion peel force between an unmodified pyrolytic carbon and silicone rubber as measured by ASTM D 903-49 after 28 days in an aqueous environment, typically, at least 10 times greater.

A prosthetic mechanical heart valve, and in particular, a bi-leaflet and/or a trileaflet mechanical valve formed with rigid frame and hinge elements for providing a stable reliable hinge mechanism with flexible leaflets formed of a thin elastomeric material adhering to and extending from the valve frame to form leaflet occluding sections bounded by outer peripheral edges for softening the opening and closing action of the valve leaflets. In one embodiment, the valve leaflet is formed of a rigid pyrolytic carbon frame supporting hinge elements and defining a leaflet pivot axis and a flexible leaflet body attached to the frame and defining a leaflet abutting section extending from one side of the valve frame and an occluding section extending from the other side of the valve frame to an arcuate leaflet seat. In the closing phase of operation, the abutting sections of the leaflet bodies contact one another in an abutting contact band, and the arcuate leaflet seats bear against arcuate seat regions of the valve body The seat regions of the valve body may also be coated with an elastomeric material.

The structure also includes a pair of papillary head holders which hold the papillary heads of the valve at a predetermined distance and angle from the annulus plate for optimum surgical positioning. The papillary heads are temporarily sutured to their holders and can be released by a simple scalpel stroke.
