The present invention provides a method for modifying a pyrolytic carbon surface to improve adhesion between it and a subsequently added polymer and/or a bio-active compound. In particular, plasma depositing an oxygen-containing, silicon-containing film forming monomer on a pyrolytic carbon surface improves adhesion of a polymer thereto, wherein the modified pyrolytic carbon surface and silicone rubber has a wet adhesion peel force greater than the wet adhesion peel force between an unmodified pyrolytic carbon and silicone rubber as measured by ASTM D 903-49 after 28 days in an aqueous environment, typically, at least 10 times greater.

The apparatus is a rapid response evaporator for material deposition in vapor. The structure is a vessel which is heated to a temperature just above the melting temperature of the liquid which it contains. Inserted into the heated liquid is a funnel shaped evaporator structure in which the vertical tube is a capillary structure to raise the heated liquid from the vessel. The upper diverging portion of the evaporator contains a porous capillary interior coating in contact with the capillary tube, and the exterior is independently heated. Because of the low thermal mass of the upper portion of the evaporator and the liquid in its capillary structure, it can respond to heat changes quickly enough to rapidly vary the rate of evaporation and the thickness of the deposited coating.

The adapter assembly includes a pair of clamping members which clamp against the cable jacket for strain relief, and the clamping members are fastened to a mounting member which itself is mounted across the cable exit between inwardly facing surface portions of the cover members and secured by the fasteners which previously secured the cover members to each other. The adapter assembly enables an assured strain relief mechanism for a larger dimensioned cable than that for which the preexisting connector was intended. The mounting member can cooperate with the strain relief surfaces previously defined on the cover members at the cable exit to provide a strain relief slightly compressing the conductors arranged in two bundles passing on either side of the mounting member.

Silicon doping of GaAs provides n conductivity in {100} planes and p conductivity in {111} A planes. A split level of Si-doped GaAs utilizes this phenomena to provide a bipolar transistor. In one embodiment, the emitter is one level of the layer in the {100} planes, and the collector is another level of the layer in the {100} planes. These n conductivity levels are joined by {111} A planes to form a p conductivity base. The junctions in the layer between the {100} planes and the {111} A planes form an npn transistor.

A method is provided for selectively doping a compound semiconductor such as GaAs in situ by molecular beam epitaxy. The surface of the GaAs is coated with a thin layer of As by exposing it to an arsenic flux within a molecular beam epitaxy chamber. Selected areas of the surface are irradiated with a laser beam or a beam of photons, electrons, or ions in order to desorb As and form a mask of As on the surface. Dopant material such as tin is then deposited over the surface and As mask. The semiconductor is then heated to desorb the As mask while leaving the dopant in the unmasked areas. An epitaxial layer of GaAs is then grown over the surface by molecular beam epitaxy.

The present invention is related to systems and methods for modifying various non-equidimensional substrates with modifying agents. The system comprises a processing chamber configured for passing the non-equidimensional substrate therethrough, wherein the processing chamber is further configured to accept a treatment mixture into the chamber during movement of the non-equidimensional substrate through the processing chamber. The treatment mixture can comprise of the modifying agent in a carrier medium, wherein the carrier medium is selected from the group consisting of a supercritical fluid, a near-critical fluid, a superheated fluid, a superheated liquid, and a liquefied gas. Thus, the modifying agent can be applied to the non-equidimensional substrate upon contact between the treatment mixture and the non-equidimensional substrate.
