A drug-eluting endocardial lead and method of manufacture. The silicone elastomer of the present invention is ideally suited to a manufacturing environment due to its extended pot life and decreased curing time. A preferred silicone elastomer is comprised of a multi-part mixture having at least a base portion and a curing portion. Additionally, since curing does not begin until the base and curing portions are combined, the mixing can be physically undertaken closer to the location of the endocardial lead and the curing “clock” does not start until the mixing occurs and external heat is applied. Since the silicone elastomer formed by base and curing components have improved the pot life and curing characteristics, the mixture is suitable for mixing with a steroid and then dispensing into an endocardial lead tip thus eliminating current design limitations imposed by current art while concomitantly minimizing manufacturing costs.

A central lumen of the sheath is configured to permit introduction of the lead and includes a flexible, kink-resistant section smooth on its outer surface with a helical pleat defining a helical groove enabling a conductor extending from the mapping probe to the pacing system analyzer to be received in the helical groove of the sheath. A mapping probe at the first end of the sheath is connectable to a pacing system analyzer for seeking a location on the myocardial surface of the heart or an endocardial location at which optimal pacing parameters can be achieved prior to implantation of the lead.

The conductor has an enlarged, preferably ball shaped distal extremity comprising a termination element. The lead assembly includes a tip electrode having a proximal portion, a proximal extremity, a distal portion and a distal extremity, the distal extremity comprising an active electrode surface. At least the proximal portion of the tip electrode comprises a tubular structure, the tubular proximal portion having an inside diameter slightly smaller than the termination element on the distal extremity of the conductor. The tubular proximal portion of the tip electrode has formed within the wall thereof at least one longitudinally oriented, keyhole-shaped opening. The opening comprises an aperture and a longitudinal slot connecting the aperture and the proximal extremity of the tip electrode, the aperture being smaller than the termination element. The termination element is seated in the aperture of the at least one opening and one or welds may be added between the periphery of the aperture and the termination element to enhance the electrical and mechanical integrity of the connection therebetween.

Elastic or inelastic rings received in longitudinally spaced annular grooves provided in the outer peripheral surface of the elongated lead body bias together the first and second elongated tubular components. An elongated electrical conductor is received in the full lumen and an overlying sheath is in contiguous engagement with the peripheral outer surface.
