A scroll-type fluid displacement apparatus, in particular, a compressor unit is disclosed. The unit includes a housing with a fluid inlet port and a fluid outlet port. A fixed scroll with first end plate and first spiral element is fixedly disposed in the housing. An orbiting scroll with a second end plate and a second spiral element is disposed for orbiting motion in the housing. The first and second spiral elements interfit with one another at an angular offset to make a plurality of line contacts to define at least one pair of sealed off fluid pockets. A drive pin extends from an inner end of a drive shaft. The orbiting scroll has a boss which rotatably supports a bushing. An eccentric hole is formed in the bushing and the drive pin is received within this hole. The center of the drive pin is located on an opposite side to the center of the drive shaft with regard to a straight line, which passes through the center of the bushing and is perpendicular to a connecting line passing through the center of the drive shaft and the center of the bushing. The center of the drive pin also is beyond the connecting line in the direction of rotation of the drive shaft. The bushing has a balance weight for cancelling a centrifugal force which arises because of the orbiting motion of the scroll member and bushing. Dynamic balance is accomplished by the use of a pair of balance weights affixed to the drive shaft for generating a moment of the same amount, but opposite in direction, to the moment generated by a force due to the interaction of the centrifugal force of the orbiting parts and the first balance weight.

In a scroll type compressor unit including two interfitting fixed and orbiting scroll members in the compressor housing, a crank shaft projecting from the interior of the compressor housing and rotatably supported by a radial bearing, a crank pin on the inner end of the crank shaft on which the orbiting scroll member is rotatably supported by another radial bearing, and a rotation preventing mechanism for preventing the orbiting scroll member from rotating, an oil accumulating chamber is provided in the compressor housing to connect with the fluid inlet port of the compressor housing in order to lubricate those radial bearings and other moving parts. A shaft seal assembly is mounted on the crank shaft in a shaft seal cavity which is communicated with the oil accumulating chamber through a first oil passageway formed in the wall of the compressor housing. The compressor housing is provided with an oil deflector depending from its inner surface and a second oil passageway formed in the wall of the compressor housing to communicate between the interior of the compressor housing adjacent to the oil deflector and the oil accumulating chamber. The cool lubricating oil in the oil accumulating chamber circulates through the first oil passageway, shaft seal cavity, the interior of the compressor housing and the second oil passageway, lubricating the shaft seal assembly, the radial bearings, scroll members and other moving parts in the compressor housing.

Each scroll member has an end plate and a spiral element which are maintained angularly and radially offset so that both spiral elements interfit with a line contacts between the spiral curved surfaces to define moving sealed off pockets. In order that the fluid may be reliably taken into all fluid pockets, the end plate of the fixed scroll member is formed with a suction port connecting to the fluid inlet port at a position adjacent to the outer terminal end of the orbiting spiral element. Thus, the fluid introduced through the suction port may be taken into a fluid pocket which is formed at the outer terminal end portion of the orbiting spiral element and is sent along the outer surface of the orbiting spiral element to a fluid pocket which is formed at the outer terminal end of the fixed spiral element. The fixed spiral element is formed so that its outer terminal end engages with the inner surface of the compressor housing, and a seal plate member is disposed to close the gap between the inner surface of the housing and the peripheral surface of the orbiting end plate. This permits the fluid sent to the outer terminal end portion of the fixed spiral element to be pre-compressed.

A reciprocating piston type refrigerant compressor is disclosed. The compressor includes a housing having a cylinder block provided with a plurality of cylinders and a crank chamber adjacent the cylinder block. A piston slides within each cylinder and is reciprocated by a drive mechanism which includes a rotary drive shaft, a rotor mounted on the drive shaft, and a coupling mechanism which converts the rotary motion of the rotor into the reciprocating motion of the pistons. The coupling mechanism includes an inclined member which has an inclined surface disposed at an adjustable incline angle. Accordingly, the stroke of the pistons within the cylinders can be changed by adjusting the incline angle of the inclined surface in response to the change of pressure in the crank chamber. A spring applies a force to urge the inclined surface to a decreased incline angle when th incline angle is greater than a predetermined incline angle, but applies no force when the angle is less incline than the predetermined incline angle.

The compressor comprises a front end plate member and a cylindrical casing attached to an end surface of the front end plate member. A polygonal shaped portion is formed on the outer peripheral surface of the front end plate member and a plurality of projections are formed on an opposite end of the housing from the polygonal shaped portion. The end surfaces of the projections are aligned on the same plane with each end surface of polygonal shaped portion. The end surfaces of the projections and the polygonal shaped portion have tapped holes for attaching mounting brackets. Therefore, a variety of suitable mounting arrangements can be used to mount the compressor and the mounting angle of the compressor can be adjusted.

In a scroll type fluid compressor having an orbiting scroll member and a fixed scroll member which form at least one pair of outer fluid pockets and a central pocket therebetween for fluid compression, the axial end surfaces of each spiral element of the scroll members have a groove along the spiral curve. At least one closed portion is located along the groove to block fluid flow in the groove. A seal element is loosely fitted in the groove. During operation the compressed fluid flows into the groove to urge the seal element against the end plate of the opposite scroll member so that the axial sealing between the spiral element and the end plate is assured without leakage of fluid along the groove. Also, the closed portion is located along the spiral element at the location where the line contact point where the outer fluid pockets and the central pocket merge to prevent back pressure changes from causing excessive wear of the seal element.

An end plate of a housing for the compressor supports and bears the drive shaft and is formed with an oil port extending from a shaft seal cavity mounting a shaft seal of the drive shaft to a gap between the end plate and the rotor, with the drive shaft being formed with another oil port extending the shaft seal cavity and a gap between the rotor and the wobble plate whereby the lubricant oil flows through the gap between the rotor and the wobble plate, the oil port in the drive shaft, the shaft seal cavity, the oil port in the end plate, and the gap between the rotor and the end plate in the order. The rotor is formed with an annular recess on a surface thereof facing the end plate and in eccentricity from the rotating axis of the rotor. A valve plate secured between a cylinder block and a cylinder head is formed of a thin ground steel plate or a thin metal plate used for a spring and is formed with discharge and suction openings by punching. The cylinder head is formed with suction and discharge chambers partitioned with a partition wall means which has sharp end projections formed on an end surface thereof to bite into a gasket between the end of the partition wall and the valve plate to firmly secure the gasket. Two service valves are provided on a side surface of the housing which are communicated with the suction and discharge chambers, respectively, of the cylinder head through a hole extending in the cylinder block and the valve plate.

Both wrap means are interfitted to make a plurality of line contacts between them, and a driving mechanism including a drive shaft is connected to one of the scroll members to effect orbital motion thereof relative to the other (fixed) scroll member while rotation of the orbiting scroll is prevented. The center portions of the wrap means are made thicker than the remaining portions thereof, the center portions extending substantially from the inner ends of the wrap means outwardly at least throughout the portions thereof which contact one another when the two innermost fluid pockets are merged into a single fluid pocket to form the high pressure space near the center of the scroll members. This construction insures sealing of the high pressure space from adjacent fluid pockets, keeping volumetric efficiency and horsepower requirement of the unit to a certain level under a limited accuracy of machining of the spiral elements.
