A stator coil to be wound in and around a stator is manufactured. An insulating-coating conducting wire is bent to alternately provide the wire with slot-held conductor sections held in slots of the stator and a coil-end conductor section mutually connecting the slot-held conductor sections outside the slots. The coil-end conductor section is deployed outside the stator in the circumferential direction thereof. In manufacturing the stator coil, three or more pairs of molds are located along a portion of the wire in its longitudinal direction at predetermined intervals. The coil-end conductor section is formed by moving the molds along a direction allowing paired molds of each mold to come closer to each other, and the slot-held conductor sections is formed by moving the molds, in parallel, in both a direction perpendicular to the longitudinal direction and the longitudinal direction thereof.

The in-slot portions are arrayed in each of the slots in a form of multiple layers aligned in a radial direction of the stator core. The stator winding is made up of a first winding and a second winding which are connected together through a joint. The first winding is defined by a portion of the stator winding between the joint and an end of the stator winding which is to be connected to an external. The second winding includes the in-slot portion placed within at least one of the slots as an outermost layer that is one of the layers placed most outwardly in the radial direction of the stator core. A tapered cage coil is prepared, having a small-diameter top coil end 101 and a large-diameter base coil end. The tapered cage coil is axially inserted into a stator core. Then, the tapered cage coil is radially expanded to thrust slot-accommodated portions of the coil into slots of the stator core. This can eliminate the necessity of deforming the base coil end to thereby facilitate the manufacturing procedures. At the same time, possible spring back can be mitigated.
