An α-(unsaturated alkoxyalkyl)acrylate composition is provided which enables an α-(unsaturated alkoxyalkyl)acrylate product to be stored at a high purity for an extended period of time and can fully suppress problems such as discoloration and gelation from arising during polymerization, and a method of safely preparing α-(unsaturated alkoxyalkyl)acrylate compositions industrially, with high purity. The composition includes an α-(unsaturated alkoxyalkyl)acrylate of a specific structure and an antioxidant, the content of the antioxidant being from 0.03 to 0.5 wt % per 100 wt % of the α-(unsaturated alkoxyalkyl)acrylate.

The lactone ring-containing polymer of the present invention meets the following conditions that: (1) the content of polymer gels of 50 μm or greater in average particle diameter is lower than or equal to 100 pieces/100 g, and the weight average molecular weight of the polymer is 50,000 to 170,000; and/or (2) an increasing rate of viscosity after heated at 280° C. for 30 minutes is 2.0 times or smaller. The lactone ring-containing polymer of the present invention contains very few foreign matters and does not easily cause gelation, in addition to being excellent in transparency and heat resistance as well as having the desired properties such as mechanical strength and forming and processing properties. The forming material obtained by heating and granulating such a polymer are suitable for use in, for example, optical components such as light guide materials, optical lenses, and optical films.

The low birefringent material of the present invention is, for example, an acrylic copolymer including a lactone ring structure which can provide a positive retardation and a structural unit which can provide a negative retardation, the acrylic copolymer satisfying following conditions that: (A) the copolymer has a glass transition temperature (Tg) of 100° C. or higher; (B) a film comprising the copolymer has a total light transmittance of 85% or higher; and (C) a retardation per 100 μm of thickness in an in-plane direction of the film is 10 nm or lower, and a difference between a retardation per 100 μm of thickness in an in-plane direction of the film after the film is drawn by 1.5 times and a retardation per 100 μm of thickness in an in-plane direction of the film before the film is drawn is 20 nm or lower. The low birefringent material of the present invention has excellent transparency and heat resistance, also has other desired properties including mechanical strength and forming processability, has low coloration properties when no nitrogen atom is contained, and particularly has high optical isotropy.
