The magnetic recording medium substrate product includes a disk-shaped non-magnetic substrate having a circular hole in a center portion thereof, and having a chamfer formed at least one of a portion between a main surface on which a magnetic layer is to be formed and an outer end surface and a portion between the main surface and an inner end surface defining the circular hole, wherein the chamfer has a surface roughness (Ra) falling within a range of 4.0 Å≦Ra≦100 Å, preferably 4.0 Å≦Ra≦50 Å, as measured by means of an AFM.

    摘要: The present invention provides a magnetic recording medium which enables improvement of the layer quality of magnetic layer grown on the surface of a soft magnetic underlayer by conducting excellent control of crystal orientation by imparting an optimal half-width of the Rocking curve (Δθ50), as well as obtainment of SNR that suppresses generation of TA and enables realization of high-density recording. The magnetic recording medium includes a soft magnetic underlayer, an orientation control layer, a perpendicular magnetic recording layer, and a protective layer, which are disposed on top of a non-magnetic substrate; wherein the magnetic anisotropy ratio (Hmr/Hmc) of the soft magnetic underlayer is 1 or less, and Δθ50 is 1 to 6 degrees. The soft magnetic underlayer is formed on the primary surface of the non-magnetic substrate where the primary surface has been polished one substrate at a time by a sheet-type texture processing device using polishing tape and a slurry containing colloidal silica abrasive grain.

    摘要: A magnetic recording medium comprising a magnetic layer having a magnetic recording pattern comprising elevations constituting magnetic recording regions and depressions constituting boundary regions for partitioning the magnetic recording regions, and a continuous protective carbon overcoat on the magnetic layer, characterized in that portions of the carbon overcoat located on the magnetic recording regions-constituting elevations of the magnetic layer are thicker than portions of the carbon overcoat located on the boundary regions-constituting depressions of the magnetic layer. The protective carbon overcoat is formed by a CVD method. The boundary regions-constituting depressions are preferably subjected to exposure to plasma, and have modified magnetic characteristics. The magnetic recording regions exhibit high corrosion resistance and the magnetic recording medium has enhanced environmental resistance.
