摘要:
A surgical stapler having a trigger attached to a ratcheting mechanism for preventing the refiring of the stapler trigger with a staple loaded within a forming mechanism. In addition, the mechanism contains driver buffering means to prevent the sharp reduction in opposing force driving formation of a staple. The staples are constantly maintained in proper orientation during transfer from a track to the forming site, and are self-centering on the former, and have an oversized crown so that cold-worked areas on each staple do not hinder forming.

A cautery tool is provided with a compact, lightweight, user-directable lighting facility that can be powered by either a shared external power source from which a power flow is shared continuously with the cautery function, by a supplemental self-contained power cell that may be recharged by a portion of the external power for use independently of the cautery function, or by sharing of a self-contained power cell by the cautery and the lighting functions. Waste heat generated during exercise of the lighting function is continuously removed from a light-emitting element by electrical conductors also serving as heat transfer conduits.

A multi-position rotary valve system is useable with a disposable fluid transfer set for carrying out a sequence of steps to implement a drain and fill procedure in connection with peritoneal dialysis. A method of carrying out peritoneal dialysis includes utilizing a rotary, multi-position, valve system in conjunction with a fluid flow transfer set having a plurality of flexible fluid flow conduits. The valve system provides for systematically opening and closing the respective fluid flow conduits in a predetermined sequence for the purpose of carrying out a drain and fill procedure of the type associated with peritoneal dialysis.

A compact, self-contained lighting system is attachable to a surgical tool to enable a user to selectively direct light at a site where the tool is to be applied. The system has a power unit that may contain rechargeable power cells, a malleable electrical connection element, and a light-emitting element powered thereby to emit high intensity white light, preferably from an LED. The system ensures against tissue damage due to inadvertent overheating by continuously removing byproduct heat from the light-emitting element, via the connection element, to the power unit with portions of each of these components serving as respective heat sinks and/or as thermal conduits to facilitate this process. The removed heat is dissipated to the ambient atmosphere, the surgical tool and even the user, and permits safe prolonged operations in confined regions of a patient's body.

An elastic port protector closing the end of a tubular port, typically on a peritoneal dialysis solution or parenteral solution bag. The port protector defines an outer tubular section having inner and outer ends, and with an inner diameter which is less than the outer diameter of the tubular port on which it is intended to reside. An inner tubular section is connected to the outer tubular section at the outer end and is capable of occupying the bore of the outer tubular end in telescoping relation thereto. The inner tubular section has an outer diameter greater than the inner diameter of the tubular port, to fit into the bore of the tubular port in sealing relation. Handle means is carried on the outer tubular section to aid in removal of the port protector.
