The use is provided of a composition as a feed additive which comprises one or more endoglucanases, and 0-20% by weight, based upon the content of cellulase proteins in the composition, of a cellobiohydrolase. The endoglycanases may be one or more of EGI, EGII, EGIII and any functionally active derivative of any thereof. Such endoglucanases may be obtained from a genetically modified strain of the fungus Trichoderma. Also provided is an enzyme-based feed additive which comprises EGI and/or EGII which lack the cellulose binding domain, and 0-20% by weight, based upon the content of cellulase proteins in the additive, of a cellobiohydrolase. A further enzyme-based feed additive is provided which comprises a cereal-based carrier, one or more endoglucanases, and 0-20% by weight, based upon the content of cellulase proteins in the additive, of a cellobiohydrolase.

The present invention relates to the use of a combination of a protease and an inner salt of a quaternary amine carboxylic acid for the preparation of an agent for the treatment and/or prophylaxis of coccidiosis and bacterial infections such as necrotic enterities in animals. Preferred embodiments of the invention comprise the inclusion of a xylanase and/or an α-amylase in the agent. A nutritional additive comprising a combination of an inner salt of a quaternary amine carboxylic acid protease and (optionally) a xylanase and an α-amylase is also disclosed. It can be used for improving the rate of weight gain of animals.

The present invention relates to codon-optimized xylanase coding sequences and the expression of xylanases in microbes and yeast. The invention further relates to using multiple copies of the xylanase expression construct for high levels of protein expression. The invention also relates to the use of xylanases as feed or food additives. The invention also relates to methods of expression of enzymes to increase thermotolerance by expressing them in organisms that glycosylate proteins compared to expression that the same enzyme without the glycosylation. Further, the invention relates to methods of preparing feed, enzyme feed additives, and methods of reducing the feed conversion ration or increasing weight gain of animals.

Xylanase or a cellulase for the manufacture of an agent for the treatment and/or prophylaxis of bacterial infection in an animal caused by Salmonella, Campylobacter or Clostridium perfringens. It is preferred that xylanase is used in combination with wheat to form an animal feed. Such a diet is particularly effective in controlling Campylobacter and Salmonella in chickens. The use provided by the present invention affords an alternative to antibiotics when controlling bacterial infection in animals. This leads to considerable health, environmental and economic benefits.
