An improved method for preparing amino polyols is disclosed. The method is the Mannich condensation of phenol, formaldehyde and diethanolamine in a molar ratio of (1:1:1), and then alkoxylation with a mixture of ethylene oxide and propylene oxide in a weight ratio of about 5:95 to 20:80 to form an amino polyol of hydroxyl number 440 to 515.The method gives higher yields of aromatic amino polyols of lower viscosity than those of the comparative example.

A method for producing a flexible polyurethane foam from reacting a polyol blend with a polyisocyanate in the presence of a polyurethane formation catalyst is described. The polyol blend contains from 0.5 to 10 wt. % of an aromatic polyester polyol extender typically used in rigid foams. The polyol extender is made from dibasic acids, alkylene glycols and recycled polyethylene terephthalate. Commercial extenders cause flexible foams to shrink, a problem not found in the foams of this invention.

The improved process includes contacting the N-(substituted) diethanolamine compound with a catalytically effective amount of a silica-alumina or certain phosphorus-containing substances at temperatures of from about 190.degree. C to about 260.degree. C under a pressure sufficient to maintain the mixture substantially in liquid phase and recovering from the reaction mixture the formed N-(substituted) morpholine.According to a preferred embodiment, triethanolamine is heated in the presence of a catalytically effective amount of a silica-alumina catalyst having an aluminum content of from about 5 to about 50 wt. % at temperatures of from about 240.degree. C to about 260.degree. C in liquid phase to selectively produce the corresponding N-(hydroxyethyl)morpholine (HEM).

An improved process is disclosed for the production of cyanoethylated aromatic amines comprising contacting an aromatic amine with acrylonitrile in the presence of a silica-alumina catalyst in a liquid phase reaction at elevated temperature. Aromatic polyamines are cyanoethylated according to the process of this invention to form a reaction product comprising poly-(N-monocyanoethylated) aromatic amines and poly-(N-monocyanoethylated) aromatic amines additionally having at least one cyanoethyl group attached to the nucleus of the aromatic ring.

Novel amino polyols made by alkoxylating ethylene glycol diamine bottoms products, such as triethylene glycol diamine bottoms products, and tetraethylene glycol diamine bottoms products are described. For example, these bottoms products, alone or together, maybe propoxylated in a non-catalytic reaction to give amino polyols that are useful in producing rigid polyurethane foams. The resultant foams have better K-factors and a higher percentage of closed cells than comparable foams made with conventional amino polyols.
