摘要: In an automobile, communications to and from the automobile are in the form of messages. Such messages are referred to as “electronic car-mail” or “C-mail” messages as each message has a destination or origination address which includes an identifier, e.g., a vehicle identification number (VIN), identifying the automobile. The messages may be delivered to the automobile from a remote server through a communications network, e.g., the Internet. One such message may contain a recall notice to the automobile. Another message may contain just-in-time map information for navigation, depending on the current location of the automobile. Yet another message may contain advertising information concerning selected entities, e.g., restaurants, gas stations, department stores, etc., also depending on the current location of the automobile. The messages transmitted from the automobile to the remote server may contain, e.g., GPS information identifying the location of the automobile, dynamic data furnished by sensors in the automobile for analysis, an odometer reading and a speedometer reading for records, etc.

摘要: A method and apparatus is provided for eliminating conflicts on a communication channel, and particularly on a shared communication channel having a plurality of active stations, each capable of seizing use of the channel. A counter at each station contains a representation of the identity (address) of the station having the current opportunity to seize use of the channel. The representation is sequentially altered to provide the opportunity to each station to seize use of the channel, and each station not having such opportunity is inhibited from seizing the channel. The representations in the counters are synchronized each time a station seizes use of the channel, and may also be synchronized if no station seizes use of the channel.

摘要: A high-speed byte-parallel pipelined error-correcting system for Reed-Solomon codes includes a parallelized and pipelined encoder and decoder and a feedback failure location system. Encoding is accomplished in a parallel fashion by multiplying message words by a generator matrix. Decoding is accomplished with or without byte failure location information by multiplying the received word by an error detection matrix, solving the key equation and generating the most-likely error word and code word in a parallel and pipelined fashion. Parallelizing and pipelining allows inputs to be received at very high (fiber optic) rates and outputs to be delivered at correspondingly high rates with minimum delay. The error-correcting system can be used with any type of parallel data storage or transmission media to create an arbitrary level of fault-tolerance and allows previously considered unreliable media to be effectively used in highly reliable memory or communications systems.

摘要: A logic system is disclosed for using a memory device of the serial read type having redundant elements in excess of the nominal memory size and consists of a Programmable Read Only Memory having a defect map programmed into it with respect to the associated memory device, a shift register of a predetermined length equivalent to the maximum number of allowable defects, a multiplexer associated with the shift register, a position counter for controlling the multiplexer and, finally, appropriate logic to control the system. This system is disclosed in connection with a bubble memory system of the field access major loop -- minor loop type having extra minor loops. As defects are encountered in writing, data is shifted through the shift register while the multiplexer is incremented to the proper output position of the shift register based on the number of encountered defects. As data is read, an analogous reverse to writing operation is performed with the multiplexer being decremented. In either writing or reading, the multiplexer will never be shifted more than one position for each data bit.
