A method and apparatus for continuously removing waste yarn during doffing of a textile yarn processing machine is disclosed, which includes a mobile carriage which is adapted to move to a position adjacent a winding station to be doffed. The carriage mounts a waste yarn take-up spool, and yarn transfer means for moving the advancing yarn from the winding station to the take-up spool. After doffing the full package, the yarn transfer means moves the advancing yarn back to the empty bobbin, and the carriage is then free to move to the next winding station. The waste yarn wound on the take-up spool may be advantageously used for quality control measurements.

A bobbin transport apparatus and method is provided which is adapted for use with a textile yarn processing machine having a plurality of yarn winding stations along at least one side thereof. The transport apparatus includes a movable carriage having a mandrel for receiving the full bobbins from the winding station of the processing machine, and quality control means for measuring a number of physical characteristics of each full bobbin received thereon. The quality control measurements may be performed concurrently with the transport of the bobbins to a remote creel, and the measurements are fed to a computer where an immediate determination is made as to whether the measured quality characteristics fall within accepted tolerance limits. The computer may also be employed to calculate additional quality control related characteristics, such as yarn denier and bobbin wind tightness, from the directly measured characteristics. The apparatus may further include a printer mounted on the carriage for printing the measured or calculated quality characteristics on a label or directly onto each bobbin.

A bobbin changing apparatus is provided which is adapted for use in association with a textile yarn processing machine having a plurality of winding stations, and wherein the apparatus comprises a thread operating carriage and a separate doffing carriage, which are mounted for independent movement on a common trackway. The thread operating carriage acts to sever and withdraw the advancing yarn during the bobbin changing operation, and upon an empty bobbin being mounted at the winding station, to then deliver the yarn to the automatic thread-up mechanism on the winding head of the machine. The doffing carriage includes a mandrel for receiving the full bobbins, and since the doffing carriage is independent of the thread operating carriage, the doffing carriage is free to immediately move from the winding station to deliver the full bobbin to a separate creel, or to perform a quality control analysis of the full bobbin. The thread operating carriage preferably carries a supply of empty bobbins, and includes a mechanism for donning the empty bobbins after the doffing operations have been completed by the doffing carriage.

Said movements can be controlled by a force impinging in a substantially horizontal direction relative to the carrier element (14), in particular a force which can be applied and which can be detected by a sensor device (25). In order to improve upon a control system in a simple to operate and low cost manner, in particular in such a way that load independent control is achieved with a high degree of positioning accuracy and rapid positioning speed, the sensor device (25), according to the invention, is embodied in such a manner and arranged in such a manner with respect to the carrier element (14) that the force is detected in a path-free manner. Path-free in this context is taken to mean that components of the sensor device (25) do not move through macroscopically registerable path with respect to each other.

A yarn friction false twist apparatus is provided which comprises three sets of friction discs mounted on rotatable spindles in a triangular arrangement, and which includes a plurality of yarn deflecting arms for moving the yarn from an inoperative laterally spaced position where thread-up may be effected, to an operative path of travel disposed centrally between the sets of discs and wherein twist is imparted to the yarn by contact with the rotating discs. The yarn deflecting arms are mounted on a pivotally mounted door which also serves to protectively cover the sets of discs during operation. Each of the yarn deflecting arms has an open yarn guide at the forward free end thereof, with the length of the arm being such that the guide is free of contact with the yarn during the twisting operation. Also, there is provided a fixed yarn catch mounted below the discs in axial alignment with the operative path of travel for operatively engaging and retaining the yarn upon the yarn being moved toward the operative path of travel and whereby the yarn may be guided from the operative path of travel to a position exteriorly of the area encompassed by the endless drive belt for the spindles.
