The present invention relates to nucleic acid sequences encoding ciliary neurotrophic factor (CNTF) and to the proteins, peptides, and derivatives produced therefrom. In various embodiments of the invention, the nucleic acid sequences, proteins, and peptides of the invention may be used in the treatment of a variety of neurological diseases and disorders, including Alzheimer's disease. In a specific embodiment of the invention, CNTF may be used to support the growth of spinal cord neurons, thereby providing a method of treating spinal cord damage caused by trauma infarction, infection, nutritional deficiency or toxic agents. The present invention also relates to a novel method for producing substantilly pure CNTF. The invention also relates to pharmaceutical compositions comprising effective amounts of CNTF gene products which may be used in the diagnosis and treatment of a variety of neurologial diseases and disorders. The present invention relates to the cloning sequencing and expression of CNTF and provides, for the first time, a means for producing human CNTF utilizing human CNTF-encoding nucleic acid sequences. Furthermore, the CNTF nucleic acid sequences of the invention may be utilized to identify nucleic acid sequences encoding CNTF or CNTF-homologous molecules in a variety of species and tissues.

Pharmaceutical dosage forms for oral administration to a patient for the treatment of diabetes, comprising insulin and a delivery agent that facilitates insulin transport in a therapeutically effective amount to the bloodstream and that result in a lower incidence of vascular diseases associated with the repeated administration of insulin are disclosed. Also disclosed is a method of attenuating the undesirable incidence of diseases associated with chronic dosing of insulin is provided whereby the oral administration to a patient of insulin along with a suitable delivery agent that facilitates the absorption of insulin from the gastrointestinal tract of the patient in a therapeutically effective amount, for treatment of diabetes.

A load board includes an embedded relay tracker circuit that counts and stores relay clicks to measure relay usage. Having accurate relay usage data reduces maintenance costs. The relay tracker circuit includes a controller with a counter for counting relay clicks of the load board relays and wires or conductive traces connecting the controller to the relays. Each time a relay switches, a signal is transmitted from the relay to the controller and the controller increments the counter. The count information then is stored in a memory connected to the counter.

A method of testing for power and ground continuity of a semiconductor device having Input and Output (IO) pins and at least a pair of power and ground pins includes identifying the power and ground pins of the device. A victim pin is selected from the IO pins of the device for each pair of the power and ground pins, and an aggressor pin for each victim pin is selected from the remaining IO pins. The aggressor pins are toggled between a high state and a low state. A level of switching noise on each victim pin is measured, and the measured levels of switching noise are compared with predetermined data to determine power and ground continuity of the device.

The invention further provides for a method of alleviating the toxic effects of vincristine on motor neurons comprising treating motor neurons with an effective amount of HGF and an effective amount of CNTF. The methods may be carried out in vitro or in vivo. The invention also provides a method of treating a motor neuron disorder in a patient comprising administering to the patient an effective amount of HGF and CNTF.
