    摘要: Provided is an optical body capable of arbitrarily and quickly controlling the optical characteristics of incident light. A refractive index variable layer (8) formed of PLZT or other material and a magneto-optical material layer (9) formed of garnet or other material are provided side by side between a first reflective layer (3) and a second reflective layer (5). If linearly polarized light is made incident from the side of the first reflective layer (3), the incident light interacts with the magneto-optical material layer (9) and is converted into a right-circularly polarized light component and a left-circularly polarized light component. A very small retardation occurring between both the right- and left-circularly polarized light components is amplified through multiple reflections between the pair of reflective layers (3, 5) and is controlled according to a controlled refractive index of the refractive index variable layer (8).

    摘要: An object of the present invention is to make it possible to record information on an optical information recording medium in the form of three dimensional interference patterns so that the information is erasable in part.The optical information recording medium (1) has an information recording layer (3) made of a magneto-optic recording material. A pick-up (11) of an optical information recording/reproducing apparatus generates information light by spatially modulating laser light emitted from a light source unit (20) with a spatial light modulator (22), and generates recording-specific reference light spatially modulated in phase by spatially modulating the phase of the laser light emitted from the light source (20) with a phase-spatial light modulator (16). The information recording layer (3) of the optical information recording medium (1) is irradiated with the information light and the recording-specific reference light. An electromagnetic coil (30) applies a magnetic field to the information recording layer (3). A three-dimensional distribution pattern of magnetization corresponding to the interference pattern resulting from the information light and the recording-specific reference light is formed in the information recording layer (3).

    摘要: A Faraday rotator of multilayer film type is provided in which satisfactory optical characteristics are obtained with a small number of layers. In the Faraday rotator, a first periodic dielectric multilayer film made of silicon dioxide SiO2 and tantalum pentaoxide Ta2O5 is formed on a substrate, then a magneto-optical thin film, and a second periodic dielectric multilayer film made of tantalum pentaoxide Ta2O5 and silicon dioxide SiO2 are formed sequentially. The first and second periodic dielectric multilayer films sandwich the magneto-optical thin film such that their respective higher refractive dielectric thin films are in contact with the magneto-optical thin film. The number of layers of the first periodic dielectric multilayer film is larger than that of the second periodic dielectric multilayer film.

    摘要: A spatial light modulator includes a device portion and a bias field applying coil disposed around the device portion. The device portion includes a magnetic layer and two types of conductor layers. The magnetic layer is made of a magneto-optic material and includes a plurality of pixels whose directions of magnetization are set independently of one another. Each of the pixels causes rotation of a direction of polarization of incident light depending on its direction of magnetization due to a magneto-optic effect. The conductor layers generate a magnetic field for setting the direction of magnetization of each of the pixels of the magnetic layer. Each of the pixels includes two regions which can take different states of magnetization. Information is produced by changing the states of magnetization in those regions.

    摘要: The present invention provides a magneto-optical member capable of ensuring an excellent light transmittance and an optical isolator using the same. A first one-dimensional magnetic photonic crystal having a magneto-optical thin film, and a second one-dimensional magnetic photonic crystal having another magneto-optical thin film are laminated so as to sandwich a dielectric thin film with a small refractive index having an optical length of &lgr;/4+m&lgr;/2 where &lgr; is a wavelength of light and m is 0 or a positive integer. Since a plurality of magneto-optical thin films are present as magnetic thin films and hence the total thickness of the magnetic thin films is increased, the Faraday rotation angle is increased. Also, a large light transmittance can be obtained because of the presence of the dielectric thin film with a small refractive index having (&lgr;/4+m&lgr;/2) thickness where the first and second one-dimensional magnetic photonic crystals are laminated.
