Abstract: A method of preparing an electrode for a lithium-ion battery includes mixing a magnetic, electrically conductive material with a lithium conductive polymer; forming tubes of the polymer and magnetic, electrically conductive material; mixing the tubes with a slurry of an electrode material; coating a current collector with the slurry; and applying a magnetic field to the slurry to align the tubes within the slurry in relation to the current collector. The aligned tubes form electrical and ionic conductive pathways within the slurry. The tubes have a length less than half a thickness of the slurry.

Abstract: A method of preparing shape-controlled alloy particles includes dissolving a solvent in a surfactant selected to inhibit particle growth; adding a noble metal precursor and a transition metal precursor to form a mixture; irradiating the mixture with a microwave under reflux for about thirty minutes or less at an irradiation temperature of between 185° C. and 195° C.; cooling the mixture; and drying the mixture at a temperature of between 55° C. and 65° C. to obtain shape-controlled alloy particles having a uniform shape, the shape dependent upon the surfactant used.

Abstract: A lithium ion battery has an anode comprising a current collector, a separator and an active material layer having active material particles. Each active material particle comprises a core of an alloying material including silicon and a polymer coating on the core, the polymer coating comprising a heat-shrinking polymer that shrinks as temperature increases. As cycling increases across a life of the lithium ion battery, an expansion amount of the alloying material of the core increases, temperature of the anode increases, and an amount of shrinkage of the polymer coating increases, such that as the core attempts to expand against the polymer coating, the polymer coating exerts an opposite force on the core.

Abstract: A method of making a three dimensional electrode having an active material layered between a current collector and a separator includes growing nanotubes at predetermined points on a first sheet of electron directing material, wherein the electron directing material is highly conductive and chemically inert; aligning the nanotubes in a direction perpendicular to the first sheet; functionalizing a distal end of each nanotube; bonding a second sheet of electron directing material to the functionalized distal end of each nanotube; depositing magnetic particles along the second sheet; applying a magnetic field to the magnetic particles to rotate the first sheet, the second sheet and the nanotubes ninety degrees to form an electron directing structure; and attaching the electron directing structure on a surface of the current collector with a polymer binder. The electron directing structure is configured to direct electron flow along a layered direction of the three dimensional electrode.

Abstract: A method of preparing an electrode for a lithium-ion battery includes coating a slurry of electrode material onto a current collector, penetrating the slurry with rods coated with a polymer that expands when heated and shrinks when cooled, heating the rods coated with polymer while penetrated in the slurry. The polymer expands during heating, and then shrinks when cooled. The cooled rods and the polymer are removed from the slurry, leaving micro-pathways in the slurry where the rods and polymer penetrated.
