Abstract: A method for assembling a two-dimensional fiber array launcher assembly. The method includes providing an alignment structure having a two-dimensional alignment plate with holes at one end and a two-dimensional beam shaper with micro-lenses at an opposite end. An endcap having a fiber attached thereto is systematically positioned in each hole, and is aligned with one of the micro-lenses with a high precision tolerance. The aligned endcap is then secured in the hole using a curable glue. This process is continued until all of the holes have aligned endcaps. If one of the endcaps is mis-aligned or becomes damaged, the glue can be heated and the endcap realigned or replaced.

Abstract: A WDM seed beam source for a fiber laser amplifier system that includes a number of master oscillators that generate seed beams at different wavelengths and a spectral multiplexer that multiplexes all of the seed beams onto a single fiber. An EOM modulates the combined seed beams on the single fiber and a spectral demultiplexer then separates the modulated seed beams into their constituent wavelengths on separate fibers before the seed beams are amplified and spectrally combined. The fiber laser amplifier system includes a separate fiber amplifier that amplifies the separated seed beams, an emitter array that directs the amplified beams into free space, beam collimating optics that focuses the uncombined beams, and an SBC grating responsive to the collimated uncombined beams that spatially combines the collimated uncombined beams.

Abstract: A method for reducing nonlinear frequency shifts and suppressing stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) in a fiber laser amplifier system. The method includes providing a seed beam having a certain wavelength and frequency modulating the seed beam with an RF waveform to spectrally broadening the seed beam, where the RF waveform is a relatively slow-speed waveform having a large modulation depth. The method also includes amplifying the frequency modulated seed beam with an amplifier having a large nonlinear phase shift and exhibiting frequency modulation (FM) to amplitude modulation (AM) conversion, where the modulation depth is much larger than the nonlinear phase shift of the amplifier.

Abstract: A method for fabricating a beam shaper array assembly, where the beam shaper array assembly changes the shape of a plurality of beams. The method includes providing an optical endcap having a plurality of connector stems, welding a fiber to each of the stems to form an emitter array and positioning a beam shaper array adjacent to the endcap opposite to the stems. The method also includes measuring an angle error and a position error of each fiber, calculating a correction for each fiber for the angle error and the position error and correcting the angle and position of each fiber using the calculated corrections.

Abstract: A fiber amplifier system including an optical source providing an optical seed beam and an FM electro-optic modulator (EOM) that frequency modulates the seed beam to broaden its spectral linewidth. The system also includes an AM EOM that modulates the seed beam to provide an amplitude modulated seed beam that is synchronized with the frequency modulated seed beam. The system also includes a non-linear fiber amplifier receiving the AM and FM modulated seed beam, wherein the amplitude modulated seed beam causes self-phase modulation in the fiber amplifier that phase modulates the seed beam as it is being amplified by the fiber amplifier that acts to cancel the spectral linewidth broadening caused by the frequency modulation.

In another embodiment, the system includes a single diffraction grating, where the optical beams pass through the grating twice to also remove the angular dispersion caused by the DOE.

Abstract: A beam shaper array assembly including a beam source that provides a plurality of beams having a low fill factor profile. The assembly also includes an input beam shaper array having cells positioned adjacent to each other, where each cell includes an input beam shaper that receives one of the plurality beams and is shaped to cause the beam to expand as it propagates away from the input array to be converted from the low fill factor profile to a high fill factor profile. The assembly further includes an output beam shaper array having cells positioned adjacent to each other, where each cell includes an output beam shaper that receives one of the converted beams and is shaped to cause the beam to stop expanding so that the output array provides a plurality of adjacent beams with minimal overlap and a minimal gap between the beams.

Abstract: A beam combiner array assembly including an array block having a back wall and a front surface and a plurality of aligned and sealed channels extending from the back wall to the front surface. A lens array including a plurality of lenses is secured to the front surface of the block so that one of the lenses is aligned with each channel, and a plurality of fiber flanges are secured to the back wall of the block so that a separate one of the flanges is aligned with each channel. A hollow core fiber extends through each flange and the back wall so that an end of the fiber is positioned within one of the channels. A beam that propagates down each fiber is emitted into the channel, focused by the lens and emitted from the assembly as a collimated beam.
