A helical antenna having a radiator portion formed on a flexible substrate and a rigid substrate with a center feed element electrically connected to the radiator portion. The flexible substrate is supported by a support assembly with the radiator portion spaced substantially equidistant from the center feed element. The support assembly includes a first non-conductive member mounted to one surface of the rigid substrate at a first location, a second non-conductive member mounted to a second surface at the first location, a third non-conductive member mounted to the one surface at a second location spaced from the first location, and a fourth non-conductive member mounted to the second surface at the second location. A tool for assembling the helical antenna is provided having a base member with a plurality of elongated members mounted thereon substantially equidistant from each other and extending outwardly therefrom. A plurality of holes formed in the elongated members removably receive pins when in registration with holes in the flexible substrate. A rotatable tuning cap for fine tuning the antenna may be used having a plurality of tuning elements extending axially with the central antenna axis.

A compact, low cost antenna communicates with low and medium earth orbit satellites. The antenna includes a plurality of micro-strip elements arranged about an axis and positioned to illuminate upper elevation angles. The micro-strip elements are perpendicular to each other and are oriented toward the horizon at 90 degree increments. Furthermore, the micro-strip elements are tilted at a 50 degree angle. A quadrifilar helix is positioned at the center of the micro-strip elements and positioned to illuminate lower elevation angles. The micro-strip elements generate an omni-directional field pattern in the azimuth plane. The quadrifilar helix generates a high-gain, narrow beam-width field pattern that is also omni-directional in the azimuth plane. The antenna provides improved immunity to specular ground reflections by limiting reception of signals below a threshold elevation angle. Also, the antenna provides continuous, uninterrupted communications by eliminating "dead" period associated with conventional parabolic dish antennas.

Techniques for improving coverage of an antenna system are disclosed. In an aspect, a wireless device includes a 3-D antenna system to improve coverage and enhance performance. The 3-D antenna system includes antenna elements formed on multiple planes pointing in different spatial directions. Antenna elements formed on the multiple planes are associated with different antenna beams, which can provide a larger line-of-sight (LOS) coverage for the wireless device. Beamforming may be performed for the antennas on a given plane to further improve LOS coverage. Non-LOS (NLOS) coverage may also improve since antenna beams pointing in different spatial directions may result in reflected signals of higher power levels due to better signal reflection for some antenna beams.

A ground station antenna array includes a first array of antenna elements. A second array of antenna elements are vertically aligned with the first array of antenna elements. The first array of antenna elements and the second array of antenna elements are coupled to the digital beam forming circuitry and each cover a same sector of azimuth; the first array of antenna elements only covering a first elevation; the second array of antenna elements only covering a second lower elevation. The digital beam forming circuitry directs a radiation pattern of the first array of antenna elements in a first range of elevation angles, and directs a radiation pattern of the second array of antenna elements in a second range of elevation angles. The second array of antenna elements has higher gain than the first array. A respective transceiver is coupled to respective antenna elements of the first and second arrays.

The present invention represents an integrated antenna assembly comprising a cellular communications antenna and a satellite communications antenna. Such an antenna assembly can, therefore, be used for communications over either frequency range. A wireless telephone using this assembly can, therefore, operate with either a terrestrial cellular communications system or a satellite communications system. In a preferred embodiment of the invention, the satellite communications antenna is a quadrifilar helix antenna and the cellular communications antenna is a sleeve dipole. The whip portion of the sleeve dipole is positioned axially in the center of the quadrifilar helix antenna. This orientation permits operation in both the satellite and cellular frequency ranges without significant electromagnetic coupling.

A dielectric resonator antenna having a resonator formed from a dielectric material mounted on a ground plane with a conductive skirt. The ground plane is formed from a conductive material. First and second probes are electrically coupled to the resonator for providing first and second signals, respectively, to or receiving from the resonator. The first and second probes are spaced apart from each other. The first and second probes are formed of conductive strips that are electrically connected to the perimeter of the resonator and are substantially orthogonal with respect to the ground plane. A dual band antenna can be constructed by positioning and connecting two dielectric resonator antennas together. Each resonator in the dual band configuration resonates at a particular frequency, thereby providing dual band operation. The resonators can be positioned either side by side or vertically. Further advantage is obtained by mounting the dual antenna stack within a radome.
