In high-speed high-density recording, heat generation becomes a problem as high-frequency modulation and strong magnetic field of a magnetic head are realized. A thermally coupling contact portion is extended from a part of a suspension and is brought into contact with a magnetic core, by which heat generated in a coil is dissipated to the suspension via the magnetic core and the thermally coupling contact portion.

A slider portion is provided with protrusion portions having a spherical surface, contacting a recording medium. A center of a magnetic pole is arranged on the line C1 connecting the vertices of the protrusion portions. Line C1 is more or less aligned with the gliding direction of the protrusion portions. Thereby, positional variations between the magnetic pole and the surface of the recording medium can be minimized even when the head slider is tilted with respect to the surface of the recording medium. Thus, a gliding converter support structure is provided whose conversion efficiency does not decrease when it is tilted with respect to the surface of the recording medium, which is easy to manufacture, has little gliding resistance, and does not easily accumulate dust.

A transducer supporting apparatus (K1-K7) comprises: a transducer (11, 12) which confronts a recording medium (1) and is moved relative to the recording medium (1) in a direction (R) so as to record and reproduce information on the recording medium (1); a slider (21-27) which is coupled with the transducer (11, 12) and includes a projecting member (21a-25a; 26a, 26b; 27a, 27b) protruding towards the recording medium (1); a pivot member (31-33; 35-37) for pivotally supporting the slider (21-27) so as to pivot the slider (21-27) about a pivot axis (x-axis) substantially parallel to the recording medium (1) and at least not parallel to a contact line (C) between the projecting member (21a-25a; 26a, 26b; 27a, 27b) and the recording medium (1); and a loading member (31-33; 35-37) for depressing the projecting member (21a-25a; 26a, 26b; 27a, 27b) against the recording medium (1); wherein the contact line (C) is oriented in a direction other than the direction (R) of relative movement between the recording medium (1) and the transducer (11, 12).

A magnetic head device comprises a moving member comprising a slider, which is fastened to a system for applying a magnetic field and slides on or is close to an optomagnetic disk, an elastically supporting member having a first end, to which the moving member is attached, the elastically supporting member supporting the moving member in a manner that the moving member can move, a fastening member fastened to a second end of said elastically supporting member, a position control pin, and a position control hole formed at the center of gravity of the moving member. When a shock is applied, the position control pin mates with the position control hole, so that not only the vertical position of the moving member, but also its horizontal position can be restricted. Moreover, since the position control hole is formed at the center of gravity of the moving member, a resultant moment on the moving member can be avoided. Thus, a magnetic head device with excellent shock resistance can be provided. Since it is not necessary to provide a weight extending the moving member in longitudinal direction, further miniaturization of the device can be realized.

A collision preventive member that limits displacements of an objective lens in a focusing direction is provided. The collision preventive member includes a first limiting portion that limits displacements of the objective lens present within a first region while allowing a movable range of the objective lens in the focusing direction to overlap a deflection range of the optical disc within the first region, and a second limiting portion that limits displacements of the objective lens present within a second region in establishing a relation such that the movable range of the objective lens in the focusing direction does not overlap the deflection range of the optical disc within the second region. A controller that controls the objective lens in such a manner that the objective lens is located within the second region in a non-focusing state of the objective lens is provided. It is thus possible to prevent a collision between an optical disc and the objective lens under the environment where vibrations are applied.

An optical disc clamp mechanism that is capable of selectively playing back either of a compact disc or a mini disc. The clamp mechanism includes a circular disc receiving section for contacting a reference surface of either of the compact disc or the mini disc and further includes a magnetic clamp unit for clamping the mini disc by magnetic attraction with a magnetically attractable member of the mini disc. A first conical or spherical taper cone portion for engaging the center hole of the mini disc is mounted to the disc receiving section and a second conical or spherical taper cone portion for engaging the center hole of the compact disc is mounted to the disc receiving section. The first taper cone portion is located inwardly of the second taper cone portion and protrudes from the second taper cone portion in the axial direction. The magnetic clamp unit further includes a stopper element for preventing detachment of the first and second taper cone portions from the disc receiving section. Accordingly, the optical disc clamp mechanism independently affects the centering of a mini disc and a compact disc to allow either of the discs to be centered.

An optical head is driven in a tracking direction with respect to a rotating optical disc. The optical head includes a light source, an optical block, a condenser shifter, and a rotating mechanism. The light source is used to read and write data from/on the optical disc. The optical block supports the light source. The condenser shifter includes a condenser, a movable body, a base, a focus direction drive mechanism and a tracking direction drive mechanism. The condenser focuses light, emitted from the light source, toward the optical disc. The movable body supports the condenser. The base supports the movable body elastically such that the movable body is able to shift in a focus direction and in the tracking direction. The focus and tracking direction drive mechanisms are provided to shift the movable body in the focus and tracking directions, respectively. The rotating mechanism rotates the condenser shifter around a predetermined axis with respect to the optical block on at least one of a first plane, which is parallel to the tracking direction and perpendicular to the optical disc, and a second plane, which is perpendicular to the tracking direction.

An optical disc apparatus includes a withdrawal means for moving an objective lens (32) to a position distant from an optical disc (1) during an inactive duration of intermittent recording or reproducing operation. A means for regulating or fixing the objective lens (32) at the position distant from the optical disc (1) is further provided. Thus, even in a noncontrolled state during the inactive duration, it is possible to prevent collision of the objective lens (32) with the optical disc (1). As a result, both power saving and safety of the apparatus can be attained.

In a clamp mechanism, an adapter, and an optical disc apparatus for compatibly playing back an MD and a CD having different centering hole diameters and reference heights, a first clamp mechanism has a taper cone section for both the MD and CD, while a second clamp mechanism has an MD turntable and a CD clamper which is driven in contact with the MD turntable while clamping the CD. The adapter is a disc which has a hole having the same inner diameter as that of the centering hole of the MD and a thickness of 0.8 mm, the adapter to be attached to the CD. A first optical disc apparatus has an MD spindle motor and a CD spindle motor, and an optical system including an objective lens is arranged on a Straight line that connects both the spindle motors. A second optical disc apparatus has a spindle motor having an MD turntable and a CD turntable at both its ends.
