Abstract: In emulsion polymerization in an acid medium a salt of a polymer of a vinyl pyridine having the formula in which R is hydrogen, alkyl, vinyl or a -methyl vinyl groups, at least one and not more than two of the R's being vinyl or a -methyl vinyl and the total number of carbon atoms in the alkyl groups not exceeding 12, used as an emulsifying agent. A base may be added to coagulate the polymer and precipitate the polyvinyl pyridine, so that a homogenous blend of the two polymers is obtained. Specified pyridine derivatives are 2-vinyl, 2,5-divinyl, 2-methyl-5-vinyl, 2,3,4-trimethyl-5-vinyl, 3,4,5,6-tetramethyl-2-vinyl, 3-ethyl-5-vinyl, 2,6-diethyl-4-vinyl, 2-isopropyl-4-nonyl-5-vinyl, 2-methyl-5-undecyl-3-vinyl, 3-dodecyl-4,5-divinyl, 2,4-dimethyl-5,6-dipentyl-3-vinyl, 2-decyl-5-(a -methylvinyl), 3,5-di-(a -methylvinyl) pyridines. The salts may be those of sulphuric, hydrochloric, nitric, phosphoric, formic, acetic, propionic, butyric, oxalic, malonic, succinic, glycollic, chloracetic, dichloracetic and trichloracetic acids. Suitable monomers are styrene, a -methyl-styrene, alkyl-styrenes, acrylo-and methacrylonitriles, methyl and ethyl acrylates, methyl methacrylate, vinyl chloride, vinylidene chloride, mixtures thereof and with conjugated diolefins such as 1,3-butadiene. Suitable catalysts are persulphates alone or in conjunction with bisulphites, iron pyrophosphates or sugars. Examples describe the emulsion polymerization (1) of 2-vinyl and 2-methyl-5-vinylpyridines using potassium persulphate, soap flakes and a mixture of C12, C14 and C16 mercaptans, coagulation with sulphuric acid, conversion of the fatty acid formed to soap by addition of a base, and purification by solution in isopropyl alcohol followed by precipitation with water; the polymer, 50 per cent neutralized with sulphuric acid, being used to polymerize styrene in aqueous emulsion containing potassium persulphates, sodium bisulphite and a mercaptan blend; (2) acrylonitrile using poly-2-vinyl pyridinium sulphate; (3) acrylonitrile and acrylonitrile-butadiene mixtures using poly-2-vinyl pyridinium acetate; (4) vinyl chloride and a vinyl chloride-acrylonitrile mixture using poly-2-vinylpyridinium chloride.
