Abstract: Disclosed herein are flame-retardant electric cables (10) having a core containing an electric conductor (11) and an electrically insulating layer (12) made from a flame-retardant polyolefin-based composition including a) a cross-linked polyolefin as base polymer, b) silica, and c) carbon nanotubes, wherein the amount of silica is from 5 wt % to 10 wt % of the polyolefin-based composition, and the amount of carbon nanotubes is from 0.5 wt % to 2 wt % of the polyolefin-based composition. Such cables have improved flame retardant performances, especially regarding a lower occurrence of droplets during burning, which render them capable of being certified in higher classes of the current international standards, for example of the standard EN 50399:2011/A1 (2016).

Abstract: An optical fibre comprising: an optical waveguide comprising a core surrounded by a cladding; a primary coating surrounding the optical waveguide; and a coating, surrounding the primary coating, comprising a polymer material obtained by radiation curing a polymerizable composition, the polymer material having a degree of crystallinity of at most 12. The coating of the optical fiber according to the present invention exhibits enhanced resistance upon exposure to high temperature, preferably a temperature over 250° C., while endowed with required features such as protective capability, elasticity, adhesion to underlying layer and simple manufacturing.

Abstract: The present invention relates to an energy cable comprising a cable core comprising an electric conductor and a crosslinked electrically insulating layer, wherein the cable core further comprises a microporous material having a bimodal pore volume distribution with a first peak of the distribution having a maximum at a pore diameter value within the range 5.5-6.5 Å and a second peak of the distribution having a maximum at a pore diameter value within the range 7.5-8.5 Å, the maximum values of the first and the second peak corresponding to an incremental pore volume of at least 4×10−3 cm3/g. The present invention also relates to a method for extracting methane crosslinking by-products from a crosslinked electrically insulating layer of an energy cable.

Abstract: An optical fibre comprising: an optical waveguide comprising a glass core surrounded by a glass cladding; a primary coating surrounding the optical waveguide; a secondary coating, surrounding the primary coating, comprising a cured polymer material obtained by curing a curable coating composition comprising: (a) a polyester obtained by esterification of a reactant A selected from carboxylic acids, triglycerides, and mixtures thereof, having a C16-C24 aliphatic chain comprising at least two double bonds spaced by one carbon atom at most, with a reactant B selected from polyols having at least 3 hydroxyl groups, the polyols being thermally stable up to 300° C.; (b) an aromatic glycidyl epoxy resin; (c) an aliphatic polyether hardener containing from 8 to 64 hydroxy groups and/or from 2 to 4 epoxy groups; and (d) a secondary amine compound as curing agent. Preferably, the step of curing is a thermal curing, preferably up to 300° C. When cured by heat, the coating material can be applied during the drawing process of the fibre so as to exploit the heat of the just drawn glass fibre as heat source for curing.

Abstract: An optical fibre comprising: an optical waveguide comprising a glass core surrounded by a glass cladding; a coating surrounding said optical waveguide comprising a polymer material comprising a cured polyester obtained by: (a) esterification of a reactant (A) selected from carboxylic acids, triglycerides, and mixtures thereof, having a C16-C24 aliphatic chain comprising at least two conjugated double bonds, with a reactant (B) selected from polyols having at least 3 hydroxyl groups, the polyols being thermally stable up to 300° C.; (b) curing of the 10 so obtained polyester, in the presence of a transition metal salt, the transition metal being selected from Mn, Fe, Co, Cu, and Ni. Preferably, the step of curing is a thermal curing, preferably up to 300° C. The transition metal salt acts as curing accelerator, i.e. it increases the curing rate so as to match the optical fibre drawing speed, the temperature of the glass exiting the drawing step and the drawing tower height commonly used in industrial plants for optical fibre production.

Abstract: The present invention relates to a process for the synthesis of molecules that have a pyrrole ring bonded to a diol. In particular, the invention relates to the synthesis of molecules that have the pyrrole ring and a diol derived from serinol by means of a process that does not demand the use of solvents or chemical catalysts.The process consists of a first reaction phase that takes place without any solvents and/or organic diluents, giving rise to an intermediate compound, and a second phase in which the intermediate compound is converted into the required compound by heating the reaction mixture to a temperature ranging from 100° to 200° C. for an interval in the range of 1 to 500 minutes, or by adding a carbon allotrope or its derivatives.
