    摘要: An injector for a diesel engine is provided which includes a housing having an internal bore, and a reciprocating plunger disposed within the bore and coacting therewith to pump fuel, dampen plunger movement, and quickly vent fuel pressure to provide a sharp end of injection. The bore is generally coextensive with the housing and a spray tip is attached to the end of the bore to introduce fuel into a combustion chamber. The plunger forms a chamber at the end of the bore that expands to admit fuel and contracts to express fuel as the plunger reciprocates within the bore. The chamber has an upper portion that pumps fuel and a lower sealable portion that entraps fuel to dampen plunger movement. The plunger and bore also form a reciprocating spill valve above the chamber to vent fuel pressure. An internal inlet passage supplies fuel to the pumping chamber portion. An internal spray passage connects the pumping chamber portion to the spray tip. The spill valve communicates with the chamber. An internal relief passage connects the spill valve to an exit port.

    摘要: This disclosure deals with apparatus for adjusting the timing of injection in an internal combustion engine wherein the fuel system includes unit injectors. The injector for each combustion chamber of the engine is actuated to inject fuel by a cam-follower-linkage mechanism that operates in time relation with the movement of the pistons of the engine. Each such mechanism includes a cam which is rotated in synchronism with the pistons of the engine, a pivotable cam follower which rides on the cam, and a linkage which connects the follower with an injector. The injector includes a plunger which seats on a cup or nozzle to terminate injection. To adjust the timing of injection, the pivot point of the follower and the angular point of engagement of the follower with the cam are moved. The relation of the cam, the follower and the linkage are arranged such that the movement of the linkage does not materially change the effective travel of the plunger as the timing is changed within a broad range. Consequently, the compression load on the plunger and the injector nozzle remains substantially constant at the termination of injection regardless of changes of the timing.

    摘要: A control system for controlling fueling and/or timing of a fuel injector in an internal combustion engine. Fuel injection is controlled based upon the recent operating history of the engine. In particular, the difference between the instantaneous speed and the average speed over a previous predetermined period are compared and the difference is utilized in determining a control variable which in turn can be used for selecting fueling and/or timing values. The difference between the instantaneous fueling and the average fueling over a predetermined period can also be used in selecting the control variable. The fuel injector fueling and/or timing is determined utilizing fueling and/or timing values from at least two maps, with the control variable determining the proportions of the timing/fueling valves to be utilized in determining commanded timing/fueling. The control variable may also be set to a fixed value under certain conditions such as during operation on a governor, or where the operator selects an override function.

    摘要: A system is provided for controlling fuel flow within an internal combustion engine having a plurality of cylinders. The system includes a fuel source; a fuel pump responsive to the engine speed; and a multimode adjustable control valve connected to the fuel pump and a predetermined number of first cylinders. The control valve, when in a first mode, substantially shutting off fuel flow to the first cylinders, except for a minimal amount of fuel leakage from the valve to the first cylinders for lubricating purposes. When in a second mode, the control valve allows substantial fuel flow to the first cylinders. The control valve assumes its first mode when the operating temperature is below a predetermined amount and/or the engine is operating under a predetermined load.
