A method for constructing a transform for a predetermined display or printer, such printer or display being adapted to form a color image, on a particular medium, with extended chroma values while maintaining existing luminance values, the input to the transform including an input color digital image produced by a particular image capture device, the method includes providing a luminance reproduction curve in response to the input color digital image which, for any input luminance value, will produce an output luminance value, the luminance reproduction curve being selected to preserve highlight and midtone contrast, and shadow detail from the input color digital image; providing a plurality of selective luminance independent chromatic reproduction curves in response to the input color digital image which, for any input chroma value, will produce an output chroma value; and the chromatic reproduction curves being selected so that each curve is a function of the visual density range of the display or medium and the image chroma values wherein small chroma values remain unchanged and large chroma values are modified to extend chroma values while maintaining existing luminance values for a particular device or medium whereby a user can select one or more of the chromatic reproduction curves which, in combination with the luminance reproduction curve, produces color digital images so that a selected printer or display can form a color image, on a particular medium, with extended chroma values.

The present invention is directed to a method of forming a positive image in a photothermographic element comprising a potentially negative-working emulsion wherein fog density development is imagewise inhibited in exposed areas of the image upon thermal development. In one embodiment of the invention, a density-inhibiting agent is released during thermal development which agent inhibits the thermal development of unexposed silver salts in the exposed areas relative to the unexposed areas. The method preferably comprises imagewise exposing the film with a non-solarizing amount of radiation/energy to form a latent image and thermally developing the latent image in a single development step to produce a positive image in the element. The present invention is also directed to a photothermographic element that can be used in the present process in which a positive image characterized by high speed and discrimination is formed when exposed and thermally heated above 150° C.

A variable contrast photographic element containing a light sensitive silver halide emulsion layer is disclosed wherein the silver halide is sensitized with a benzimidazolooxacarbocyanine dye of the following formula (I) in an amount less than that required to impart maximum sensitivity to all of the silver halide in the emulsion. ##STR1## In formula (I), R.sup.1, R.sup.2, R.sup.6 and R.sup.7 each independently represent hydrogen, halogen, hydroxy, or substituted or unsubstituted alkyl, alkenyl, alkoxy, alkylamino, alkylthio, aryl, aryloxy, arylamino, or arylthio. R.sup.3 and R.sup.4 each independently represent substituted or unsubstituted alkyl. R.sup.5 represents a substituent containing an electron withdrawing group. X represents a counterion as needed to balance the charge of the molecule. Use of dyes of formula (I) having an R.sup.5 substituent which contains an electron withdrawing group has been found to beneficially reduce the sensitivity of variable contrast photographic elements at wavelengths longer than 570 nm, thereby enhancing safelight tolerance, while still maintaining good spectral sensitivity at wavelengths in the green region less than 560 nm.
