    摘要: Fire extinguishing compositions and methods for extinguishing, controlling, or preventing fires are described wherein the extinguishing agent includes a fluorinated oxirane alone, or in admixture with a co-extinguishing agent selected from hydrofluorocarbons, hydrochlorofluorocarbons, perfluorocarbons, perfluoropolyethers, hydrofluoroethers, hydrofluoropolyethers, chlorofluorocarbons, bromofluorocarbons, bromochlorofluorocarbons, iodofluorocarbons, hydrobromofluorocarbons, fluorinated ketones, hydrobromocarbons, fluorinated olefins, hydrofluoroolefins, fluorinated sulfones, fluorinated vinylethers, and mixtures thereof. Also described are methods of preventing or extinguishing fires by introducing these compositions into an air-containing enclosed area and maintaining the composition in an amount sufficient to suppress combustion of combustible material in that enclosed area.

    摘要: A process for preparing fluorochemical compounds, e.g., perfluoroalkanes, perfluoroethers, and perfluoroalkyl tertiary amines, comprises(a) forming a mixture comprising at least one fluorinatable, non-functional organic starting compound, e.g., propane, and at least one other compound which is present in an amount sufficient to enable the formation of a fluorochemical phase and which is selected from the group consisting of(i) perfluorochemical compounds, e.g., perfluorohexane, which boil at a higher temperature than either the fluorinatable, non-functional organic starting compound or the fluorochemical compound resulting from the subsequent fluorination of the fluorinatable, non-functional organic starting compound; and(ii) precursor compounds, e.g., hexane, which can be fluorinated in situ to produce such perfluorochemical compounds; and(b) subjecting the mixture to electrochemical fluorination in the presence of anhydrous hydrogen fluoride.

    摘要: The instant invention relates to novel liquid membrane formulations, i.e., emulsions, which comprise an aqueous interior phase and a water-immiscible exterior phase; said water-immiscible exterior phase comprising an ethylene vinyl acetate copolymer and a solvent for this polymer. These compositions may additionally contain a water insoluble surfactant to stabilize the emulsions. In the most preferred embodiment, the aqueous interior phase comprises a strong acid, for example from about 1 to 10 percent by weight sulfuric acid. These emulsions are useful in liquid membrane processes for the separation of dissolved components from aqueous solution. Emulsions of the instant invention are characterized as showing very low swelling when contacted with aqueous solutions, especially at higher temperatures and thus are especially effective for use in the treatment of sour water feed streams by the liquid membrane technique.
