    摘要: Trimethylsulfonium halides are made by reacting dimethyl sulfide and a methyl halide in the presence of a solvent mixture which includes water and a water-immiscible organic solvent. The organic water-immiscible solvent is generally present in an amount which is at least 40% but no more than 95% of the total solvent mixture. The reaction is preferably conducted under pressure.

    摘要: Oxiranes are made from ketones by heating a ketone which is preferably an alkyl ketone to a temperature of from about 60.degree. to about 90.degree. C. (preferably about 80.degree. C.) in the presence of a sulfonium salt, a quaternary ammonium salt and a potassium hydroxide solution which is at least 61% potassium hydroxide. It is preferred that no organic solvent be included in the reaction mixture. The potassium hydroxide is generally included in an amount such that for every mole of ketone, from about 3 to about 4 moles of potassium hydroxide are present. The sulfonium salt is generally used in an amount of at least 1.1 moles for each mole of ketone. The quaternary ammonium salt is generally used in an amount of from about 1 to about 5 mol % based on moles of ketone present.

The second sulfur atom is attached through an aliphatic chain of 2 to 5 carbon atoms to the sulfinate function SO.sub.2 M wherein R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 may be hydrogen, aryl, cycloalkyl or various polar groups such as OH, COOH, SO.sub.3 Na, --C(O)--, or derivatives such as esters and nonamino derivatives such as amides or nitriles. The system ##STR2## also may comprise an aromatic ring; n may be the integers 2 through 6; M of the sulfinate function is hydrogen, a metallic element selected from group 1 A of the Periodic Table such as Li, Na, or K, or the equivalent R.sub.4 N+; or an organic group such as a straight or substituted aliphatic chain having up to 4 carbon atoms, designed to promote stability. The synthesis of the compounds occurs by subjecting 1,1-dioxides of cyclic disulfides to the action of a thiolate ion, whereby cleavage is effected between the sulfur and sulfonyl units.
