    摘要: A die apparatus includes a first die configured to telescopingly engage an end section of a tubular bar, including one or more “floating” mandrels configured to extend into cavities of the tubular bar, and further including a stationary die member spaced from the mandrel(s). The mandrel(s) and the stationary die member include angled cutting edges that are aligned so that the cutting edges are engageable from a single transverse direction. The mandrel(s) is movably supported on the first die to float parallel the single direction toward and away from the stationary die member. A cutting die has a shearing punch configured to move along the single direction to sequentially engage the angled cutting edges to shear off an angled portion of the end section. The die apparatus is optimally designed for use with a rollformed swept tubular bumper bar having a B-shape and that has walls forming first and second tubular sections that define first and second cavities, with the walls further defining a third cavity between the first and second cavities. In such a die apparatus, the first die includes first, second, and third mandrels configured to extend into the first, second, and third cavities, respectively, of the B-bumper. A method related to the above apparatus is also disclosed.

    摘要: An apparatus includes, in combination, a roll former with rolls configured to form a structural beam from sheet material, and a sweep unit for longitudinally sweeping a beam in any of vertical, horizontal, or combination directions. The sweep unit has a first pair of forming rolls positioned to engage first opposing sides of the structural beam and has a second pair of forming rolls positioned to engage second opposing sides of the structural beam. The sweep unit movably supports the first and second pairs of forming rolls so that any selected one of the forming rolls continuously engages an associated side of the structural beam while an associated one of the forming rolls opposing the selected one forming roll moves downstream and around the selected one forming roll. This provides a very stable beam-bending condition promoting dimensional stability during the sweeping process, and hence dimensional accuracy and repeatability.

In a narrower form the tensile strength is at least 80 KSI, though it can be 100 KSI or higher.

    摘要: A cutoff apparatus is adapted to be positioned adjacent a roll-forming machine, and is particularly adapted for adjustably receiving and cutting bumper-length segments from a swept elongated shape made of high strength steel being extended from the roll-forming machine. The cutoff apparatus includes a carriage with rollers for rollingly engaging the elongated shape to align the carriage with the elongated shape, the carriage being adapted to periodically move with the roll-formed shape for a short distance as the roll-formed shape is being formed. The cutoff apparatus further includes a blade operably mounted to the carriage for cutting segments from the roll-formed shape on the fly. An overhead supporting device supports the carriage in a counterbalanced condition so that the carriage can pivot and/or translate as necessary to minimize undesirable stress on the roll-formed shape as the roll-formed shape extends through the carriage, thus providing a reduced need to critically align and maintain the alignment of the cutoff apparatus with the roll-formed shape.
