The electric fuel pump is configured to deliver fuel directly to the engine independent of operation of the engine. The engine controller is connected to the metering system and the electric fuel pump and is configured to cause the electric fuel pump to deliver fuel to the engine to start and operate the engine until the engine operates the mechanical fuel pump to deliver fuel to the metering system sufficient to sustain operation of the engine.
