摘要:
A sensor array is positioned in the optical scanning system of a copier so as to be able to periodically provide a measurement of the degree of image degradation present in the system due to contamination of the optical system components. The sensor array is adapted to measure the modulation transfer frequency of a bar chart which is exposed in the optical system. The measured value of MTF is compared to a predetermined value of MTF representing a uncontaminated measurement at the bar chart. When the comparison indicates that the measured MTF is below a minimum acceptable threshold value, a display is activated to alert an operator that an optic system cleaning operation is required.

A xerographic printer especially suitable for printing copies of oversized original documents is enabled by staggering a plurality of image bars in optical alignment with a linear projection means such as gradient index lens arrays which are tilted at a preferred angle. The image bars are selectively addressed in response to digitized bit-mapped data inputs representing the document information. The modulated light outputs from the bars are transmitted as focused lines on the surface of the photoreceptor. The printer includes illumination lamps and a lamp aperture which parallels the staggered image bars. Further, a multi-function copier/printer is realized by combining a variation of the xerographic printer with a conventional imaging system for copying a document.

A color correction system for a color copier is enabled by means of a low resolution RIS unit attached to a light/lens scan system which creates an electronic raster image simultaneously with formation of a color latent image. The RIS output signals are used to modulate the output of a ROS unit which exposes the color latent image to a modulated color correction pattern. Color developer units are enabled to successively develop each color.

Techniques to render documents and like objects uncopyable by photocopy means. Illumination spectral composition, object background color, and photoreceptor sensitivity are appropriately combined such that the photoreceptor perceives no object contrast. The result may be either a blackout or a whiteout of the object information.

A selective color copyability illuminator includes a pair of lamps having complementary spectral emission. The ratio of the lamp outputs are adjustable to enhance a first color of an original to be copied while suppressing the second color. The power input to the lamps is also continually adjustable to maintain a desired exposure level at an imaging plane. In a preferred embodiment, a dichroic reflector is utilized with each lamp to enhance system efficiency.

An automatic exposure control system for a full-frame copier controls the illumination of a flash lamp in response to the reflectivity of a document to be reproduced. A photodetector senses exposure at the wall of a light housing and after sufficient exposure is reached, the light source is turned off (quenched). A compensation circuit anticipates the total energy emitted after quench (representing an over exposure potential) and terminates the light source energizing pulse so as to produce only desired exposure without over-exposure error.

Apparatus for providing a structured radiation pattern in the charge distribution of a photoreceptor in electrographic reproduction machines. The apparatus is comprised of a source of radiation, a plurality of apertures and a lens system for focusing the radiation transmitted by the apertures onto a charged photoreceptor. The position of the apparatus relative to the photoreceptor can provide a method for control of the structure of the photoreceptor charge. The photoreceptor charge structure can be further controlled by providing preselected patterns for radiation transmitted by the apertures. The charge distribution of the photoreceptor can be structured to form a line or a dot pattern.

A digitizing scanner particularly for scanning transparent films such as X-rays provides an improved illuminator for transmitting light through the film. The illuminator defines a line array of a plurality of individually calibrated and controlled LEDs. The LEDs are calibrated by determining their relative points of projection on a CCD camera array. The camera array scans the LEDs and adjusts them individually to produce a predetermined illumination pattern from the group. The adjustment occurs over a plurality of cycles that address cross-talk between LEDs in the array. The camera includes anti-reflection elements to minimize bounce-back of image light and noise suppression circuitry to reduce low-level signal noise. A central processing unit, interconnected with the camera assembly includes a pixel averager to reduce the inherent resolution of the CCD to a desired level and to attenuate further noise. The scanner can include an illuminator for illuminating a scannable opaque bar-code strip and size-measurement circuitry for determining the relative size and location of the scanned image.

Method and apparatus for printing toner images in black and at least two highlighting colors in a single pass of the imaging surface through the processing areas of the printing apparatus. Imaging and development techniques of color photography and tri-level xerography are combined to produce images with black and two colors wherein the two highlighting colors are developed with only one color toner. A single imaging step forms a four level charge pattern on a charge retentive surface followed by development of two of the image levels using tri-level imaging techniques. Uniform exposure of the imaging surface, similar to that used to color photography techniques precedes development of the last image. The uniform exposure modifies the last developed image level and the background charge level allowing development of the last image with a single toner.

A dual drum rotary image scanner has a headstock and a tailstock between which may be mounted drums of different diameter. The tailstock has substantially annular surfaces which contact corresponding surfaces on the different diameter drums. The different drums, when held in the scanner, each create a different separation between the headstock and tailstock. These different separations are detected by photodetectors, the outputs of which are received by a system controller. The controller uses the photodetector signals to control motors that position the scanning head and the transmittance illuminator relative to the surface of the particular drum mounted in the scanner. The motors turn pinions which, in turn, move racks to which are attached the scanning head and the transmittance illuminator, respectively. The movement of the scanning head also results in the modification of the optical path within the optics box of the scanner. In a first position, the light from the scanning head follows a first optical path which includes a movable mirror in a first angular orientation. As the scanning head is moved to a second position, the angular orientation of the movable mirror is changed, and the light from the scanning head follows a second optical path which includes the movable mirror in its new orientation. Support arms are also provided which adjust to support the different diameter drums during loading, and mounting surfaces between the drum being mounted and the headstock and tailstock are shaped to allow the drum to be lifted off the supports as the headstock and tailstock are brought together.
