Abstract: A reusable barrel for storing and shipping fluids and other materials. The barrel is capable of being disassembled after initial use to minimize the space required for transporting it back to the original shipper and also to minimize the expense of reconditioning the barrel for reuse. The barrel comprises two nestable, frustrum-shaped half sections, each having a larger open end and a smaller end which is sealingly closed. The respective open ends of the two barrel halves each have respective outwardly projecting flanges formed around their peripheries and are sealingly clamped together by placing a resilient gasket between the two flanges, pressing the half sections together utilizing a hydraulic or similarly powerful machine, placing a plurality of interlocking C-shaped clamps over the flanges around the periphery of the barrel and releasing the half sections, thereby forming a fully assembled container having a tight, leak-proof and tamper-resistant seal. When the barrel is empty it may be disassembled by detaching the two barrel halves from one another and nesting one inside the other for shipment back to the producer. In their disassembled condition the barrel halves can be easily cleaned and reconditioned because of the accessibility of their interior surfaces, after which they may be reassembled and reused.

Abstract: A method for detachably joining together a pair of barrel half sections to form a leak-proof barrel assembly suitable for storing and shipping fluids and other materials. Abstract: A miniature electric fluid immersion heater adapted for instantaneously heating relatively small bodies or flow increments of fluid to a predetermined temperature. The heater is particularly adaptable to be mounted immediately in advance of a hot water faucet in a home or building so as to provide a continuous flow of instantaneously heated water and thereby eliminate the standard hot water heater and the entire hot water piping system in the building. The heater comprises a small, cylindrical, thermally insulated pressure vessel having a fluid inlet and outlet as opposite ends. A series of individually actuated electrical heating elements are positioned within the vessel so as to be in intimate physical contact with the flowing fluid. The heating elements are constructed of a heavy gauge resistance element which is thinly coated with a glass or ceramic frit fused into an impervious, chemically resistant, electrically non-conductive coating having negligible thermal insulation and heat storage capabilities. The wire and coating preferably have matched thermal expansion characteristics so as to minimize stress on the coating. A control circuit for selectively activating the individual heating elements delivers electrical energy automatically responsive to demand. A flow sensor prevents the activation of the majority of the heating elements unless there is a flow of fluid through the heater. When a flow is present, the amount of electrical energy transferred to the fluid as it flows through the heater is controlled by automatic separate activation of the respective elements within the heater, the number of activated elements and their periods of activation being just sufficient to maintain a predetermined fluid temperature at the heater outlet.

The barrel is capable of being disassembled after initial use to minimize the space required for transporting the barrel back to the original shipper and also minimize the expense of reconditioning the barrel for reuse. The barrel comprises two barrel halves, each in the shape of a frustum with the larger end open and the smaller end sealingly closed by a circular plate. Abstract: A reinforced board manufacturing process whereby a compressed uniform mixture of comminuted lignocellulosic particles, binder and other additives has a plurality of elongate reinforcing filaments having substantially greater tensile strength and modulus of elasticity than the mixture, embedded therein and bound to the particles by the binder. For some board applications, the reinforcing filaments comprise a plurality of short filaments, exemplarily glass fibers or steel wires, of about one-quarter to one and one-half inches in length distributed uniformly throughout the particle and binder mixture in a random orientation so as to extend generally in all directions. For board applications having greater flexural strength and stiffness requirements, the reinforcing filaments comprise a series of long filaments specifically oriented straightly in a predetermined direction corresponding to the direction of expected tensile stress and in a parallel arrangement spaced transversely from one another. The distribution of such long filaments is normally not uniform throughout the board, but rather concentrated in certain areas where greatest flexural strength and stiffness is needed. A combination of short and long reinforcing filaments embedded in the board is preferred for many applications.
