A configurable electronic work slate unit includes a customizable array of data devices and input/output devices which are selectively integrated in a compact and highly ergonomic structure. Increased operator productivity is accomplished by use of several possible user interface media including a multi-function display and input/output unit including a digitizer, position sensitive screen, and video display panel. Selectively integratable user interface components include a bar code scanner, RF modulator for radio frequency communication, modem, audio input/output, as well as the multi-purpose display. All components are integrated by use of a handle unit or module docking assembly which can house a battery as well as removable modules in a manner so as to minimize operator fatigue and discomfort, as well as enhance productivity. Configuration, reconfiguration and updating of work slate units by choice and selection of removable modules, from a variety of different types of modules, is enhanced by utilization of standardized interfaces which are intercoupled to a common signal bus. The bus configuration in combination with a bus controller functions as an intelligent bus capable of identifying types of removable modules and configuring communication protocols for operation with different types of removable modules.

A two dimensional imaging assembly is at least partially enclosed within the housing. A display screen in electrically coupled to the imaging assembly. An upper surface of the housing supports a glass window on which an ID card is positioned for reading a dataform imprinted thereon. The dataform includes a compressed digitized representation of an attribute of the authorized card holder, such as a photograph of the card holder. The imaging assembly images and decodes the 2D dataform on the ID card and the processor in conjunction with display driver circuitry causes an image of the card holder's photograph to be displayed on the display screen.

Interactive decoding of machine readable dataforms provides improved control of decoding avoiding inaccurate reading of dataforms. While data is entered (12) and encoded (14) an image of the resulting dataform, such as a data code matrix or two-dimensional bar code, is displayed (16) and continuously updated as the dataform (20) fills with entered data. Using the display (16) and an input unit (12) such as a keyboard, digitizer or scanner, data can be edited to add, modify or delete data while observing the resulting dataform (20). On completion, the final dataform code signals are provided for further use (24) or a copy of the dataform (20) is provided by printing, for example. During decoding, an image of the dataform (20) as captured by a reader (32), such as a laser scanner, CCD matrix or CMOS camera, is displayed (34). Observing the display (34), the operator can determine if the image is too small, out of focus, partially out of view, etc., and take action (33) to improve the reader (32) performance. The dataform (20) is then decoded (36) with improved accuracy and data signals are displayed or printed out (40) or provided for further use (38). A hand held dataform reader for reading 1D and 2D bar codes and matrix dataforms is disclosed. The dataform reader includes a dataform reader module having a laser bar code dataform reading assembly, for reading 1D bar codes, and an imaging dataform reading assembly, for reading 2D bar codes and matrix codes. The dataform reader module further includes selection and control circuitry for energizing a selected one of the reading assemblies. In operation, the laser reading assembly is energized first. If the target dataform is a 1D bar code, a decodable signal will be generated and decoding circuitry will decode the target dataform. If a decodable signal is not generated by the laser reading assembly, the selection and control circuitry turns off the laser reading assembly and energizes the imaging dataform reading assembly. If the target dataform is a 2D bar code or matrix dataform, the imaging dataform reading assembly will generate a decodable composite video signal representing the image of the dataform. If the video signal is decodable, the decoding circuitry will decode the target dataform.

The invention features an image reader and a corresponding method for capturing a sharp distortion free image of a target, such as a one or two-dimensional bar code. In one embodiment, the image reader comprises a two-dimensional CMOS based image sensor array, a timing module, an illumination module, and a control module. The time during which the target is illuminated is referred to as the illumination period. The capture of the image by the image sensor array is driven by the timing module that, in one embodiment, is able to simultaneously expose substantially all of the pixels in the array. The time during which the pixels are collectively activated to photo-convert incident light into charge defines the exposure period for the sensor array. In one embodiment, at least a portion of the exposure period occurs during the illumination period.
