    摘要: A periodontal probe has a probe finger extending from a handle to an L-shaped distal end which includes a tip adapted for insertion into a periodontal pocket and formed of a thermally insulative material. A temperature sensing element is mounted at the extreme end of the tip. Conductive leads extend from the sensing element, through the probe tip to the handle. In a preferred embodiment, the temperature sensor is a thermocouple or thermistor, and the tip is sealed within an epoxy outer skin. The tip tapers so that the thermal mass of the probe in the vicinity of the sensing element quickly attains the temperature of surrounding tissue while minimally perturbing that temperature. The handle may contain signal processing or temperature display units, and the probe tip preferably includes graduations for indicating probe depth. Interchangeable sensor matching circuit elements adapt sensor elements having different characteristics to a common display driver. A system includes a probe and a processor with a display which indicates periodontal site locations to prompt entry of temperature measurements and to display disease indications based on those measurements. The temperatures are processed and are compared to stored tables of temperature difference distributions, to provide site-specific tissue diagnosis.

    摘要: Balloon catheters, and medical devices including balloon catheters, are provided that comprise a balloon assembly disposed at the distal end of an elongated tubular member. The balloon, when in the inflated state, includes a body fluid lumen that extends longitudinally through the balloon and is open at the proximal end of the balloon and the distal end of the balloon. In some aspects, the outer surface of the balloon is contiguous from the proximal end to the distal end of the balloon when the balloon is inflated. In other aspects, an endoluminal prosthesis, for example, a stent that can optionally include a prosthetic valve, surrounds the balloon assembly and is adjacent to the outer surface of the balloon. In still other aspects, endoluminal prosthesis implant devices are provided that are suitable for implanting an endoluminal prosthesis in a body vessel containing a flowing fluid such as a vessel in the heart, e.g., the left or right ventricle inflow or outflow tracks. The endoluminal prosthesis implant devices include a balloon assembly and an endoluminal prosthesis surrounding the balloon assembly. The balloon assembly is configured to permit a fluid to pass from the first end of the balloon to the second end of the balloon when the balloon is in an inflated state. In some embodiments of all of these aspects, the balloon is configured to prevent a fluid from passing from the second end of the balloon to the first end of the balloon when the balloon is in an inflated state. In some embodiments, for example, the body fluid lumen includes a body fluid lumen valve moveable between a first position and a second position. The body fluid lumen valve occludes the body fluid lumen to a greater extent in the first position than in the second position. In some embodiments, the body fluid lumen valve substantially prevents a fluid from flowing through the body fluid lumen in a first direction. Certain aspects and/or embodiments of the balloon catheters, and medical devices including balloon catheters, may allow for the deployment of an endoluminal prosthetic valve (e.g., a heart valve), while the native valve can continue to function uninterrupted under its native load and flow.

    摘要: An electromagnetic field source (EFS) for providing electromagnetic energy to a secondary coil, including two or more primary coils that each carry a time-varying current to produce an electromagnetic field, and a controller that selectively provides current to one or more primary coils based on their position with respect to the secondary coil. The secondary coil may be implanted in a human recipient and used to provide power for the operation of a medical device, such as an artificial heart or ventricular assist device. The invention also provides such a secondary coil and EFS, collectively referred to as a transcutaneous energy transfer (TET) device. The primary coils of the EFS or TET may be housed in furniture. For example, they may be housed in a bed mattress or mattress pad on which the recipient rests, or in a blanket for covering the recipient. The controller includes a proximity detector that identifies those primary coils that are closest to the secondary coil, and a current director that, responsive to the proximity detector, selectively directs time-varying currents through the closest primary coils. The controller may also include an orientation detector, coupled to the current director, that determines an orientation of the secondary coil with respect to the closest primary coils. In one implementation, the proximity detector identifies the quantity of closest primary coils utilizing a resonance frequency shift detector that detects a shift in inductance of one or more primary coils due to the proximity of the secondary coil.

    摘要: An electromagnetic field source (EFS) for providing electromagnetic energy to a secondary coil, including two or more primary coils that each carry a time-varying current to produce an electromagnetic field, and a controller that selectively provides current to one or more primary coils based on their position with respect to the secondary coil. The secondary coil may be implanted in a human recipient and used to provide power for the operation of a medical device, such as an artificial heart or ventricular assist device. The invention also provides such a secondary coil and EFS, collectively referred to as a transcutaneous energy transfer (TET) device. The primary coils of the EFS or TET may be housed in furniture. For example, they may be housed in a bed mattress or mattress pad on which the recipient rests, or in a blanket for covering the recipient. The controller includes a proximity detector that identifies those primary coils that are closest to the secondary coil, and a current director that, responsive to the proximity detector, selectively directs time-varying currents through the closest primary coils. The controller may also include an orientation detector, coupled to the current director, that determines an orientation of the secondary coil with respect to the closest primary coils. In one implementation, the proximity detector identifies the quantity of closest primary coils utilizing a resonance frequency shift detector that detects a shift in inductance of one or more primary coils due to the proximity of the secondary coil.

    摘要: A periodontal probe has a probe finger extending from a handle to an L-shaped distal end which includes a probe stem portion adapted for insertion into a periodontal pocket and formed of a thermally insulative material. A temperature sensing element is mounted at the extreme end of the stem portion. Conductive leads extend from the sensing element, through the probe tip to the handle. In a preferred embodiment, the temperature sensor is a thermistor which, together with the probe stem portion, is sealed within an epoxy outer skin. The tip tapers so that the thermal mass of the probe in the vicinity of the sensing element quickly attains the temperature of surrounding tissue while minimally perturbing that temperature.
