The method of skin care includes applying a skin care preparation to the skin of an individual in an amount sufficient to moisturize the skin or to cause a reduction of skin wrinkling and a smoothing of the skin. The skin care preparation has a pH value of 1 to 7 and contains from 0.1 to 20 percent by weight of at least one betaine ester of formula (I)R.sub.1 --O--CO--CH.sub.2 --N.sup.+ (CH.sub.3).sub.3 A.sup.-(I),wherein R.sub.1 is a branched or straight chain alkyl group having from 10 to 30 carbon atoms and A- is a cosmetically acceptable anion; andfrom 0.05 to 20 percent by weight of at least one .alpha.-hydroxy acid present as a free acid, or in a lactone form thereof, or as a skin-compatible salt thereof with an organic base or an inorganic alkali, and/or as stereoisomers thereof, as D, L, and/or DL form. The at least one .alpha.-hydroxy acid is selected from the group consisting of alkyl .alpha.-hydroxy acids, aralkyl .alpha.-hydroxy acids, aryl .alpha.-hydroxy acids, polyhydroxy .alpha.-hydroxy acids and polycarboxylic .alpha.-hydroxy acids represented by the following chemical structure: ##STR1## wherein Ra and Rb represent, independently of each other, H, F, Cl, Br, an aryl group, an aralkyl group made from an aryl group and an alkyl radical having 1 to 25 carbon atoms, a saturated or unsaturated, straight or branched chain alkyl group having 1 to 25 carbon atoms, a cyclic group having 5 or 6 members including carbon atoms, with the proviso that Ra and Rb are not the same, and the aryl, arylalkyl and alkyl groups may have at least one substituent selected from the group consisting of OH, CHO, COOH and alkoxy groups having from 1 to 9 carbon atoms.

Acid aqueous or aqueous-alcoholic solutions of a salt of chitosan, in which the anion of the salt is a tenside-anion of the general formula I[R--X--(CH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 O).sub.n --Y].sup..crclbar. (I)with R being C.sub.8 -C.sub.30 -alkyl or C.sub.8 -C.sub.30 -alkylene, X is O, COO, CONR' (R' is H, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkyl or C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -hydroxyalkyl), phenoxy, n is 1 to 100, and Y is (CH.sub.2).sub.m COO.sup..crclbar. (m is 1 to 4) or SO.sub.3.sup..crclbar., as well as cosmetic preparations with a content of these solutions. The chitosan salt solutions are obtained by dissolving chitosan in an aqueous or aqueous-alcoholic solution containing, relative to the free amino groups of the chitosan, an about equimolar amount of a tenside of the formula IIR--X--(CH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 O).sub.n --Y--H (II)in which R, X, n and Y have the above-given meanings. The chitosan salts contained in the solutions possess good film-forming characteristics of known chitosan salts, but in the presence of anionic tenside form no insoluble chitosan salts. The solutions can therefore be used as skin care, hair conditioning or hair strengthening component in cosmetic preparations, particularly also in shampoos on the basis of anionic tensides.

The composition for hardening, strengthening and restructuring keratin-containing materials and/or for increasing the volume of keratin-containing fibers, such as hair, contains from 0.3 to 50.0% by weight of one or more reductones, each having a —(HO)C═C(OH)— group. The reductone ingredient is preferably ascorbic or isoascorbic acid, a salt of ascorbic or isoascorbic acid, such as an alkali metal or alkaline earth metal salt, an ester of ascorbic or isoascorbic acid, 6-O-palmitoyl ascorbate, ascorbyl phosphate, 2,3-dihydroxy-2-propenal and hydroxypropanedial. A method of treating keratin-containing materials or fibers to harden, strengthen and restructure keratin-containing materials and/or to increase the volume of the keratin-containing fibers by applying this composition and allowing it to act is described. A method of pre-treating keratin-containing material that is to be subjected to a chemical or physical treatment, such as dyeing or permanent shaping is also described.

The permanent shaping composition for permanent shaping of hair includes from 2 to 25 percent by weight of a conventional keratin-reducing compound and from 0.02 to 5 percent by weight of certain diquaternary polysiloxanes. The permanent wave-pretreatment composition includes from 0.02 to 5 percent by weight of the diquaternary polysiloxanes. The permanent shaping composition advantageously includes mercaptocarbonic acid reducing agents and has a pH of from 6 to 10 and may include conventional cosmetic additives. Methods for using the permanent shaping composition and the permanent wave-pretreatment composition are described which provide a more uniform permanant wave from the hair roots to the hair tips.

The new keratin-reducing substances useful in compositions for permanent shaping of hair are glyceryl esters of cysteine, especially the monoglyceryl esters. As monoglyceryl esters of cysteine 2-amino-3-mercaptopropionic acid-(2',3'-dihydroxypropyl)ester and 2-amino-3-mercaptopropionic acid-(1',3'-dihydroxyisopropyl)ester are particularly preferred. A preferred embodiment of the compositions for permanent shaping of hair consists of a ready-to-use mixture of a water-free component including at least one glyceryl ester of cysteine and at least one other component which is kept physically separately from the water-free component until the mixture is prepared. The compositions also can include other conventional ingredients normally used in permanent shaping compositions such as surfactants and thickeners. The compositions have a preferred pH range of 6.0 to 8.5 and contain from 8 to 28 percent by weight of the glyceryl esters of cysteine.

The present invention relates to a composition and method for permanently shaping hair, in which an N,N-disubstituted mercaptoacetamide of the formula I: or a salt thereof, wherein R1 and R2 are each independently selected from the group consisting of straight-chain alkyl groups having 1 to 6 carbon atoms, branched-chain alkyl groups having 1 to 6 carbon atoms, monohydroxyalkyl groups having 1 to 6 carbon atoms, polyhydroxyalkyl groups having 1 to 6 carbon atoms and carboxyalkyl groups having 1 to 6 carbon atoms, is employed as keratin reducing agent. A process for making these mercaptoacetamides is also described as well as a novel mercaptoacetamide, N-ethyl-2′-hydroxyethyl-mercaptoacetamide. The mercaptoacetamides provide gentle and uniform shaping of hair in a pH range of 4.5 to 9.5 and do not cause allergic or sensitizing reactions.
