Abstract: The present invention relates to a process for the production of copolymers comprising: (i) forming a reaction mixture comprising an elastomer and a vinyl aromatic compound; (ii) introducing the reaction mixture to a reaction vessel; and (iii) performing a polymerisation reaction wherein steps (i)-(iii) are performed in that order to obtain a copolymer comprising: (a) a phase comprising a reaction product of the elastomer with the vinyl aromatic compound; and (b) a phase comprising a reaction product of the vinyl aromatic compound wherein a sample of the reactor contents is obtained during step (iii) to determine of the formed copolymer: the content of phase (b); and/or●the molecular weight of phase (b) wherein the determination of the content of phase (b) in the formed copolymer and the molecular weight of phase (b) is performed by a method comprising isolation of phase (b) from the sample of the formed copolymer and subjecting the obtained phase (b) to molecular analysis. Such process allows for the determination of the content N of the phase (b) and of the molecular weight thereof in a quick and efficient manner, allowing for adjustment of process parameters such that the production of products that not correspond to the desired product quality is minimised.

Abstract: A method for providing a resin having minimal discoloration comprises combining, in a reactor or a reactor vessel, monomers, an emulsifier or surfactant, and an initiator in solution to form a polymeric latex; directing the polymeric latex into a storage system comprising a storage vessel; maintaining the latex in the storage vessel for an aging time and ensuring that the polymeric latex exhibits less than 1000 CFU/ml of biological growth according to ASTM D 5465-93 (2012) upon completion of the aging time; and coagulating the polymeric latex, wherein the polymeric latex is exposed to a mixture of water and a coagulant and filtered to provide a resin.

Abstract: The present invention relates to a process for the production of a polymer comprising the steps of: a) polymerisation of an emulsion comprising a reaction mixture to obtain a polymeric latex; and b) coagulating the polymeric latex by exposing the polymeric latex to one or more coagulant, and isolating the coagulated product to obtain a polymer; wherein the polymeric latex obtained under a) is stored prior to coagulation step b) for at most such a time that the polymeric latex contains ≤500 CFU/ml of pigment-producing organisms as determined in accordance with ASTM D 5465-93 (2012) when subjecting the polymeric latex to coagulation step b). Such process allows for the production of a polymer having a reduced discoloration. The polymers may have a desirable appearance such as an opaque, white appearance.
