Abstract:
An information storage medium (a disc) includes an area and a user data area. The area includes a recordable zone having a drive & disc zone in which information on a drive and information on a state of the disc are recorded. The drive & disc zone includes a plurality of physical clusters or ECC blocks and the information on the drive and the information on the state of the disc are recorded in the same physical cluster or ECC block or different physical clusters or ECC blocks.
Abstract:
An apparatus for and a method of reproducing information from an optical information storage medium (OISM) in which inherent information and control data are recorded according to a bi-phase modulation method and other data are recorded according to a general modulation method. Sum signals of signals reflected from the OISM are determined. A ROM-PIC demodulator demodulates optical information storage medium-related information (OISMRI) from the sum signal. A data demodulator demodulates reproduction-related user data from the sum signal, a wobble PIC demodulator demodulates recordable OISMRI recorded as pit wobbles from a differential signal of the reflected signals, and a wobble PID demodulator demodulates physical identification data that is recorded as pit wobbles from the differential signal. A determination is made whether the OISM is a read-only OISM or a recordable OISM based on whether the optical information storage medium comprises a plurality of different modulation codes.
Abstract:
An information storage medium includes an area in which updated disc-related information and recording-related information updated with a change in at least one of a disc version number and a recording speed is recorded along with existing disc-related information and recording-related information. The existing disc-related information and recording-related information are recorded, and the updated disc-related information and recording-related information is recorded in an area in which the existing disc-related information and recording-related information is recorded. Accordingly, data can be recorded/reproduced on/from a new version of information storage medium even using an existing drive.
Abstract:
A data storage medium which includes a link zone, an apparatus and a method of recording data, and an apparatus and a method of reproducing data. The data storage medium includes a plurality of ECC blocks in which user data are stored, and a plurality of link zones arranged among the ECC blocks so as to correspond to the ECC blocks, Additional information on the ECC blocks is recorded in the link zones.
Abstract:
An apparatus for and a method of signal demodulation which reduces a number of calculations required for demodulating an M-bit codeword which has been modulated from an N-bit codeword. Probability data for each bit of the M-bit codeword is tested to determine if the probability data indicates a high reliability of being either a one or a zero. Bits having the high reliability are compared with corresponding bits in each of a plurality of reference codewords and the codewords having bits which match the corresponding bits having the high reliability are used along with the probability data to calculate a probability of each bit of the N-bit codeword. As a number of bits having the high reliability increases, a number of calculations required to calculate the probability of each bit of the N-bit codeword decreases.
Abstract:
An apparatus and method to manufacture a disc include a spindle table, a spin coating portion coating a resin onto a disc substrate mounted on the spindle table, and a resin hardening portion hardening the resin, which is coated onto the disc substrate, where the disc substrate is mounted on the spindle table.
Abstract:
An optical disc on which data is recorded and/or from which the data is reproduced, includes a recording area where the data is recorded in at least one physical cluster, a defective area, where a defect that prevents a recording and/or reproduction of data is present, provided in the recording area, and a recording end area where information indicating an end of recording is recorded before the defective area. A method of recording data on and/or reproducing the data from a high density optical disc having a defective area, includes recording the data in a predetermined recording area having the defective area, and recording end data indicating an end of the recording before the defective area.
Abstract:
A recording medium storing linking type information, a method of processing a defective area in the medium and recording and/or reproducing apparatus therefor. The recording medium stores information indicating that linking is applied immediately after the defective area, distinguishing a linking type which occurs in a general incremental recording mode from a linking type which occurs after the defective area. Defective areas are detected and registered in a predetermined area (recording management data (RMD) area) before user data is recorded or while user data is being recorded in the recording medium having a plurality of continuous basic recording units, such as a digital versatile disc-rewritable (DVD-RW) in which recording and reproducing can be done repeatedly. Linking is not only applied in an incremental recording mode or in a restricted overwrite recording mode, but linking is also applied to an area immediately after the defective area which is registered in the defect list, increasing reliability of the user data. In addition, a test signal such as data, a groove wobble pattern, or a recording mark which has a test pattern, which functions as linking data is recorded in advance in a block immediately after the defective area detected during certification. If the test signal is detected after the defective area, the new user data is recorded immediately after a predetermined number of error correction code (ECC) blocks following the defective area without using linking, reducing the time for recording linking data, which is advantageous to real-time recording.
Abstract:
A method of optimizing recording conditions of an optical recording medium and an apparatus using the method. The method includes recording a test write pattern in a plurality of tracks of the optical recording medium; and checking a quality of a radio frequency signal reproduced from one of the plurality of tracks in which the predetermined write pattern is recorded and which is effected by writing in adjacent tracks to determine the optimized recording conditions.
Abstract:
An optical information storage medium and a method of recording and/or reproducing information on and/or from the optical information storage medium includes a lead-in area, a user data area, and a lead-out area in which data is recorded. The data that is not modified on storage media complying with the same physical format is recorded in the entire lead-in area or a portion of the lead-in area. A data recording modulation method used in the entire lead-in area or the portion of the lead-in area is different from a data recording modulation method used in a remaining area of the optical information storage medium.
