Abstract: Methods for cementing a subterranean well and maintaining zonal isolation involve preparing a cement slurry that contains water, an inorganic cement and an expanding agent. The slurry is placed in the annular region between casing and the formation or between two casing strings. After the cement sets, the expanding agent reacts and causes the set cement to be in a state of compression within the annular region. The casing dimensions may fluctuate in response to a temperature change, a pressure change, a mechanical disturbance resulting from a well intervention, or mud contamination or a combination thereof. The expanding agent may further react and maintain a state of compression within the annular region. The state of compression in the annular region may be monitored by acoustic impedance measurements.

Abstract: Methods may include pumping a cement composition containing one or more conductive fillers into an annular region of a wellbore created between a casing and a surface of the wellbore, allowing the cement composition to cure, emplacing a tool for measuring at least one electromagnetic property into the wellbore, and measuring at least one of the cemented casing and the formation. In another aspect, methods may include preparing a cement composition containing one or more conductive fillers, allowing the cement composition to set, and measuring at least one electromagnetic property of the set cement. In yet another aspect, cement compositions may contain a cement, one or more conductive fillers, and a surfactant, wherein the resistivity of the cement composition is less than 10 Ω*m.

Abstract: Pre-stressed cementing methods involve preparing a cement slurry containing water, inorganic cement, and capsules of an expanding agent. The slurry is placed in an annular region in the well and hardened. Expansion of the set cement is delayed. Water infiltration activates the expanding agent to rupture the capsules and release the expanding agent. The expanding agent reacts to expand the set cement to a state of compression within the annular region. The state of compression can be maintained during changes in casing dimensions from temperature or pressure, mechanical disturbance, or mud contamination. The state of compression in the annular region may be monitored by acoustic impedance measurements.
