Abstract: Hot melt adhesives comprise a major proportion by weight of atactic polypropylene having a Brookfield viscosity of 4200 to 5800 cp at 300 DEG F. and a ring and ball melting point of 115 DEG to 121 DEG C., and a minor proportion by weight of at least one material selected from tall oil, terpene resins, polyethylene, isotactic polypropylene and hydrocarbon/aldehyde resins. Specified terpene resins are polymers of a - and b -pinene. The hydrocarbon/aldehyde resins may be derived from refinery feedstocks containing 15 to 15% aromatic hydrocarbons and formaldehyde, formalin, paraldehyde, trioxane, acetaldehyde, propionaldehyde or butyraldehyde, in the presence of catalysts such as sulphuric, hydrofluoric, formic and phosphoric acids, boron trifluorides and metal chlorides, particularly sulphuric acid or boron trifluoride in the presence of acetic acid. The adhesives may be used for laminating paper, aluminium foils and polypropylene and regenerated cellulose films. Examples describe the preparation of aldehyde resins by heating catalytic gas oil with paraformaldehyde in the presence of (III) boron trifluoride/acetic acid and (IV) sulphuric acid/acetic acid catalysts, and hot melt adhesive compositions comprising atactic polypropylene, phenolic antioxidant and (I) tall oil, (III-V) hydrocarbon/aldehyde resin and/or isotactic polypropylene, (VI and VII) a -pinene polymers and/or isotactic polypropylene, (VIII) isotactic polypropylene and (IX) polyethylene.

Abstract: Thermoplastic hot melt adhesive compositions comprise more than 50% by weight of atactic polypropylene having a Brookfield viscosity of 4200 to 5800 cp. at 300 DEG F. and a ring and ball melting point in the range 115 DEG to 121 DEG C., a minor proportion of an ethylene/ acetate copolymer resin and a minor proportion of a terpene resin. The terpene resin may be derived from alpha-pinene or beta-pinene. The compositions may be prepared by mixing the constituents at 200 DEG to 400 DEG F., and may be used to bond aluminium foil, polyolefins, regenerated cellulose and paper. e.g. in the formation of corrugated paper boards. In examples butylated hydroxytoluene is used as antioxidant.ALSO:Sheet materials such as paper and regenerated cellulose film may be coated with a hot melt thermoplastic adhesive composition comprising more than 50 weight per cent. of atactic polypropylene having a Brookfield viscosity of 4200 to 5800 cp at 300 DEG F. and a ring and ball melting point in the range 115 to 121 DEG C., and minor proportions of an ethylene/vinyl acetate copolymer resin and a terpene resin, e.g. derived from alpha- or beta-pinene.
