    摘要： An apparatus is provided for sealing around shafts or tubes of varying diameter. Its basic element comprises an elastomeric sealing body with an axial passage which is radially compressed from more than two sides to compress the passage into sealing engagement with a member extending through the passage. Radial compression is achieved by cams and followers disposed around the body which cooperate with angularly spaced radially extending lugs formed integrally with the body. The cams are spring biased to normally compress the axial passage of the sealing body. Levers operable by one hand of the user are provided to selectively release the apparatus.

    摘要： A package for a catheter having a proximal end and a distal end, includes a tube defining a cavity along an elongate axis, the cavity being configured to receive at least the distal end of the catheter. Access means includes a housing fixed to the proximal end of the tube and a cap rotatable to engage the housing in a first position to seal the cavity, and to disengage the housing in a second position to provide access to the cavity. A circumferential tear-strip is configured and disposed to provide a high degree of control over the separation of the housing and cap. An O-ring, which forms a seal between the cap and housing, is disposed relative to a circumferential shoulder which cooperates with a camming surface to cause the cap to pop from the housing when rotated. An associated method includes the steps of rotating the cap a first angular distance to engage the camming surface and a second angular distance to cause the O-ring to traverse the shoulder.

    摘要： A septum valve in a trocar assembly has a variable orifice that is responsive to a cross-sectional dimension of the surgical instrument being inserted into the trocar channel, thereby minimizing leakage of inflation gas from the body cavity, such as the abdomen, being operated on. An elastomeric septum is disposed in the channel and includes portions which define an orifice having in a relaxed state a first cross-sectional area. An actuation assembly provided with levers which pivot radially outwardly to expand the seal and thereby expand the orifice to the second cross-sectional area in response to entry of the instrument into the channel. The actuation assembly is free to float in an annular recess to accommodate an instrument which is misaligned with the trocar channel.

    摘要： A surgical clip assembly is provided having two molded components and a tension spring. In one aspect, the spring clip includes a first molded portion having a first jaw and a first finger tab, a second molded portion coupled to the first molded portion and having a second jaw and a second finger tab, and a tension spring coupled to both the first and second molded portions. The first and second molded portions may be identical components. The tension spring is wound at least one turn forming a central coil and two extensions, and each of the molded portions is formed with a hinge area. Each of the hinge areas includes a hinge stud and a hinge cavity. The hinge areas align and snap-fit with one another to form the clip assembly. The extensions of the tension spring may be mounted into guide slots or ribs of the molded portions.

The handle assembly has a scissors configuration with a bayonet coupling, and flange pairs widely separated to provide a high degree of stability. The bayonet coupling enables the handles of the assembly to be fully separated for cleaning. Snap fittings between the cartridge and handle assembly are provided at the fulcrum and also at a spaced location where an operating pin of the cartridge engages intersecting slots in the flanges. Overdrive protection of three different types is contemplated along with a structure facilitating operation of the handle assembly by palming a pair of handle bars.

    摘要： A surgical instrument is adapted to contact tissue of a patient and to provide traction with the tissue in order to inhibit migration of the instrument relative to the tissue. The instrument may include a pair of opposing jaws with at least one of the jaws comprising a substrate having a particular surface facing the tissue, and a plurality of discrete elements disposed on the particular surface for increasing the traction of the instrument relative to the tissue. These discrete elements may include a multiplicity of granules, bristles, or projections and may be formed of materials having various properties such as hydrophilic characteristics. The discrete elements in the form of bristles can be oriented too so that the column strength of each bristle provides increased traction in a predetermined direction.
