The present invention provides a thermosetting organic solvent type coating capable of forming a cured coating film having a TUKON hardness at 20.degree. C. of 15 or more and the minimum value of dynamic modulus E' at a frequency of 110 Hz in the temperature range of 150-200.degree. C., of 1.times.1O.sup.9 dyn/cm.sup.2 or more. The cured film formed from the coating, as compared with the cured films formed from conventional organic solvent type coatings used as a top coat for automobile (e.g. an organic solvent type coating containing, as main components, a hydroxyl group-containing acrylic resin and a melamine resin, or a carboxylic-epoxy type coating), is at least equivalent in weatherability, finish appearance, acid resistance, etc. and superior in stain resistance.

This invention provides a thermosetting high solids coating composition comprising: (A) a copolymer prepared by polymerizing monomer components comprising (a) 30 to 50 wt. % of vinyltrimethoxysilane and/or vinyltriethoxysilane, (b) 5 to 15 wt. % of N-methylol(meth)acrylamide alkyl ether and (c) 35 to 65 wt. % of another polymerizable unsaturated monomer, (B) a hydroxyl-containing resin having a hydroxyl value of 10 to 200 mg KOH/g, and (C) a curing catalyst. This invention further provides a method for forming a topcoat using said composition. The composition of the invention achieves the following remarkable effects: it forms a coating film excellent in acid resistance and scratch resistance, and it is superior in storage stability and recoat adhesion.

This invention provides a thermosetting organic solvent paint comprising (A) a compound having at least two alicyclic epoxy groups in one molecule and having a number average molecular weight of less than 2000, (B) a secondary amino group-containing compound and (C) a thermolatent cationically polymerizable catalyst and further, under circumstances, (D) colloidal silica, and capable of forming a rigid coating film which is hard, tough and excellent in stain resistance, and from which pollutants, if adhered, are easily removed. This invention further provides a method to form a multi-layered top coating film which comprises applying, to a material to be coated, one or more species of colored paint and one or more species of clear paint in order, said method being characterized in that the above-mentioned paint is used as a clear paint which is to be applied on the uppermost layer.

The invention provides a lactone-modified organopolysiloxane compound represented by the formula ##STR1## wherein R.sub.1, R.sub.2, R.sub.3 and R.sub.4 are the same or different and each represents a methyl group, an ethyl group, a n-propyl group, an isopropyl group or a group represented by the formula ##STR2## wherein R.sub.5 is a methyl group, an ethyl group, a n-propyl group or an isopropyl group, X is a saturated divalent hydrocarbon group having 2 to 14 carbon atoms, and m is an integer of 1 to 3, provided that at least one of R.sub.1, R.sub.2, R.sub.3 and R.sub.4 is a group represented by the formula ##STR3## wherein R.sub.5, X and m are as defined above, and n is an integer of 1 to 100. The polysiloxane compound of the invention is excellent in compatibility with various organic resins.
