Abstract: A clutch assembly for a motor vehicle drivetrain includes a rigid support and a wet friction material fixed to a surface of the rigid support. The wet friction material includes a base material including a matrix of fibers and filler particles embedded in the matrix of fibers; and a binder embedded in the base material. The base material includes, by weight percent, 30-55% cellulose fibers and 10-50% calcined kaolin clay. The base material also includes at least one of 1-20% graphite having a mean particle size of 35 to 85 microns, 20-40% diatomaceous earth in combination with the binder being tung modified phenolic resin, 5-20% chopped aramid fibers, or 5-20% of novoloid fibers.

Abstract: A method of fabricating a torque converter, including: forming a turbine shell including a first annular portion with a first surface having a first roughness and forming a radially outermost portion of the turbine shell; fixing a first plurality of blades to the turbine shell; forming an impeller shell including a second annular portion with a second surface having a second roughness; fixing a second plurality of blades to the impeller shell; removing at least a portion the first or second surface without the use of particulate matter or a liquid; increasing the first or second roughness of the first or second surface from which the at least a portion is removed; applying an adhesive to the first or second surface from which the at least a portion is removed; and bonding, with the adhesive, friction material to the first or second surface.

In an example aspect, the calcium silicate particles are characterized by a spherical morphology. In another example aspect, the calcium silicate particles are characterized by a specific surface area of about 105 m2/g and an average particles size of about 10 μm.

Abstract: A clutch plate includes first and second axially offset annular surfaces, a first angled surface extending at an acute angle from the first annular surface in a first axial direction, and a second angled surface extending at an acute angle from the first annular surface in a second axial direction, opposite the first axial direction. In some example embodiments, the clutch plate has a wet friction material fixed to the first and second annular surfaces and at least one of the first and second angled surfaces. In an example aspect, the clutch plate has a low friction wet friction material fixed to the wet friction material of the at least one of the first and second angled surfaces. The low friction wet friction material may be fixed to the wet friction material by infusion or bonding.
