A method and mechanism for cooling a display device, having an extremely bright light focused on its surface and is mounted inside a closed chassis, by conducting heat from the device directly to the chassis walls, where the heat is then transferred to the lower temperature air of the ambient surroundings. The mechanism uses an adjustable mechanical linkage to close the gap and make a good thermal contact between the projection device package or heat sink stud and the chassis wall. This approach reduces the requirements for large heat sinks and noisy cooling fans found in many conventional projection systems.

A reflector extension (108) is designed to mate to the reflector (102). The reflector extension (108) has a first open end toward the reflector (102). The first open end typically is in contact with the reflector (102) to form a seal around the perimeter preventing glass shards from escaping between the reflector (102) and reflector extension (108). Preferably, the reflector extension (108) contacts the reflector (102) around the perimeter of the reflector (102). The second end of the reflector extension (108) also is open to allow the light from the arc to exit the reflector extension (108). A transparent plate (110) placed across this second open end prevents glass from leaving the reflector extension (108). The transparent plate (110) typically is glass, and may have an antireflective coating applied to the plate to limit the light reflected by the plate (110). Two or more ventilation ports (112) in the reflector extension (108) allow cooling airflow into the cavity around the burner (104). The package (44) is expedient where the device (10) includes DMD's (30) having deflectable, light-reflective beams (32). The lower face (78) of the cover (42) includes an annular light-reflective coating (60, 160) surrounding a window (80) overlying the device (10). In some embodiments, the reflective coating (60) is deposited on the walls (56, 58) of a groove (54) formed in the lower face (78) of the cover (42). Facilities (90, 72/78 or 100) seal the cover (42, 142) to the seal ring (70). The reflective coating (60, 160) prevents any unmodulated light which is incident on the beams (32) from entering an optical system associated with the DMD-containing device (10). A two-speed transmission having an input shaft and an output shaft. A slow speed input pulley and a high speed input pulley are provided on the input shaft. An overrunning clutch and a selectively engageable clutch are provided on the output shaft, each of which has a pulley provided thereon. A pair of timing belts, each of which has teeth on both sides thereof, pass around the pulleys provided on the input shaft and the pulleys provided on the output shaft causing the output shaft to rotate at an opposite direction from the input shaft. By selectively engaging and disengaging the selectively engageable clutch, the output shaft can be rotated at two distinct speeds and at the high speed, it overruns the drive mechanism for the slow speed stage as a result of the use of the overrunning clutch.
